Summary

Creating trust in wireless solutions and increasing their social acceptance are major challenges to achieve the full potential of the Internet of Things (IoT). Therefore, SCOTT – Secure COnnected Trustable Things, a pan-European effort with 57 key partners from 12 countries (EU and Brazil), will provide comprehensive cost-efficient solutions of wireless, end-to-end secure, trustworthy connectivity and interoperability (Technology Readiness Level 6-7) to bridge the last mile to market implementation. SCOTT will not just deal with \'things that are connected\', but with \'trustable things that securely communicate\', i.e. things interconnected by dependable wireless technology and valuing the end-users\' privacy rules.

Work performed

\"All procedures at project level are working well and enable a smooth und fruitful cooperation between all project partners.
From the technical point of view, the requirements have been updated, consolidated and harmonized (2nd and 3rd (final) iteration). The use case (UC) specifications have been updated (2nd and 3rd (final) iteration) and the implementation of the more than 40 Technical Building Blocks (TBB) is ongoing, with updated versions (2nd iteration) already available, integrated and successfully demonstrated within the use cases.
To facilitate the trust assurance process, trustworthiness assurance cases (TACs) were developed jointly by the SCOTT use case owners and the trust worthiness assurers. In the next step, the SCOTT use case owners evaluated each of the TACs for the likelihood and severity with which they impact the trustworthiness of the system. The trustworthiness assurers then reviewed these recommendations and classified them according to their trustworthiness. The findings are expected to be helpful to identify where to put efforts to further increase trustworthiness within SCOTT and applicable to wireless product developments outside of SCOTT.
SCOTT also further increased its impact with respect to dissemination: numerous dissemination and publication activities have taken place during the second reporting period. With a total of 57 publications the number could be significantly increased. Also several press releases have been made, workshops organised and social media activities performed. In addition, several demonstrators have gone public by creating videos available at the SCOTT website.
Exploitation of the SCOTT results has also been improved. For example, the number of exploitable foreground identified by the SCOTT partners literally exploded compared to the 1st reporting period. In addition, exploitation was substantially supported by the successful activities in terms of standardisation (with SCOTT being represented by its beneficiaries in a large number of standardisation boards) and also open innovation: a “Vehicle Data Hackathon” has been organized and executed, leading to a broad variety of submissions.
In addition, SCOTT partner TU Delft also won the \"\"Fly your ideas” competition of Airbus (against 269 competitors), with a submission based on their work done in the aeronautics work package of the SCOTT project.
As a summary, the project is very well on track, with all milestones achieved and significant results created. From the current point of view, SCOTT will be able to finish within schedule and to deliver the expected outcomes.

Final results

The excellent partner consortium of SCOTT facilitates comprehensive vertical integration in different areas, covering the full value chain from silicon to end-users and operators. By providing reference implementations, SCOTT aims at establishing an eco-system for trustable wireless solutions and services for both professional and private users by attracting 3rd parties and particularly SMEs. This together with the involvement of open innovation approaches and stakeholder engagement as well as close cooperation with AIOTI, the Alliance for Internet of Things Innovation, and other cluster organizations all over Europe will further boost and exploit the growing “Internet economy”. SCOTT will open up new market opportunities for the European industry, will significantly reduce time to market and decrease costs for trustable wireless solutions on the market, in particular by using new designs and technical building blocks. SCOTT will develop methods and tools capable of meeting prospect use-case requirements on reliability, robustness, security and functional safety even in harsh and/or not trusted environments. Ultimately, SCOTT will foster the European leadership for Smart and Connected Things (including Internet of Things) and will strengthen Europe’s independence for security enabling components and systems.
