Summary

SigmaTau and Mobile Construction System (MCS) are two Italian companies that united in 2015 to develop PortaFact due to their common sinergies and their wide expertise in the fields of sustainable architecture and moving construction solutions. PortaFact is a revolutionary Portable reinforced panel Factory which produces structural polyturethane panels for buildings alligned with the Nearly Energy Zero Emission Building strategy. It reduces transport volume and cost as one PortaFact unit contains materials and tools to produce the equivalent number of foam panels that might be shipped in 400 containers. The panels produced are seismic resistant and Passivhaus certifiable. PortaFact will target the residential building construction sector, both in Europe and in developing countries where they can greatly benefit of its simplicity and effectiveness.
PortaFact is at Technology Readyness Level (TRL) 7 stage of development. The overall aim of the project is to take it to TRL9 and to market launch in compliance with relevant EU regulations (seismic, thermal and acoustic) and certifications (Passivhaus).

Work performed

In this Feasibility Study we have analyzed the implementation of PortaFact, a ground-breaking Portable reinforced panel Factory. We have carried out research and analyses concerning various fields: 1) Technical Plan; 2) Business Plan; 3) Financial Plan; and 4) Commercial Plan and FTO analysis.
Among the objectives achieved we can highlight: analysis of the current casting mold prototype and analysis of our PU foam panels produced by it, which proves the effiency of our system and provides the knowledge of the required future improvements, a deeper knowledge of the market needs and the competitors within it; the potential of our PortaFact system (both technical and commercial); and the business plan to be followed to reach the market in the next 24 months.

Final results

PortaFact, compared to a traditional panel construction system, will imply 24.7% overall reduction in carbon footprint in the panel production, 26.8% at the construction stages, and more than 43% reduction in logistics and supply chain. Therefore, PortaFact contributes to achieve the European 2020-targets related to the decrease in energy consumption, energy efficiency, and the reduction in EU greenhouse gas emissions. PortaFact is aligned with the Energy Performance Building Directive and boosts transition towards a Circular Economy encouraging global competitiveness, sustainable economic growth and generation of new jobs.
