Summary

With 70% of all ship emission released within 400 km of land, ships are a major contributor towards air pollution in coastal communities. When docked, they use their diesel engines and/or generators to power onboard systems which are necessary for the operation of their services. These ship emissions produce pollutants: GHG gases and fine Particulate Matter. Shore connection technology is emerging as the most cost-effective method of reducing this pollution and allowing ships to use electricity directly from the electric grid. Current shore connection systems are costly to operate for the harbours, do not measure energy consumption from vessels, thus, cannot invoice it properly and do not emit overload alerts (which can cause damage to the harbor and vessels).
eShore aims to accelerate the introduction of the eShore technology into the market relating to providing an efficient, cost-effect, environmentally friendly and safe system for electricity provision for sea vessels at harbour.

Work performed

We verified the technical, commercial and financial feasibility of the eShore project. We performed an in-depth market analysis which has shown that eShore is an excellent technology capable of supplying a cost-effective shore connection to a boat while maintaining safety and ease-of-use and we are uniquely poised to exploit this gap in the market. A detailed risk analysis was done and mitigation measures were provided to ensure the project will continue on schedule. We also prepared a detailed work plan with the tasks needed for the completion of the phase 2 project. We have assessed the financial feasibility of the eShore project with positive outcomes.

Final results

Our clients are the owners and operators of harbours and marinas, who require alternatives to the costly current electricity networks, to reduce operating costs and increase the electrical safety of the entire network, with an estimated 26,792 potential customers in Europe and the US. After the eShore Ph2 project, roll-out is foreseen in Europe and the US by 2024 with annual revenues estimated at €5.1 M.
Our technology will reduce operating costs of our clients by up to 15% and will allow the harbour operator to monitor electricity usage, prevent electricity overloads and reduce the environmental impact on the coastal community. Eshore promotes a responsible use of the energy and will upgrade current harbours management with a plug-and-play software, contributing to integrate conventional facilities into the digital era.
