While the demand for non-stick cookware and household appliances has been increasing worldwide, there are even greater concerns over the safety of non-stick coatings. Most of these non-stick surfaces are coated with Teflon, with 90% of all aluminium cookware sold coated with Teflon. Tests show that when Teflon-coated pans and appliances are heated above 6800F, toxins are produced, including the likely carcinogens polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and perfluorooctanoic acid(PFOA). PFOA is linked to a range of health problems, including thyroid disease, infertility in women and organ damage as well as developmental and reproductive problems in lab animals. Toxic fumes released from heated cookware and appliances may kill pet birds and cause people to develop flu-like symptoms, called “Polymer fume fever” or “Teflon Flu”. Manufacturers’ labels warn consumers to avoid high heat on Teflon-coated appliances, but recent tests show that in just two to five minutes, cookware or surfaces coated with Teflon could exceed temperatures at which the coating breaks apart and emits toxic gases. Alternative coatings exist on the market today but no solution exists that is non-stick, stable at high temperature and completely safe. Consequently, Pramar is developing a safe, stable nanocoating for use in the appliances and cookware markets. Our product will impact Europe and the world by reducing the use of raw materials through miniaturisation, reducing the energy and CO2 emissions by 60% and self-cleaning properties help save energy, water and chemicals used in cleaning. This project will greatly benefit our company through a new range of non-stick, enamelled appliances (new generation of our current products), allowing us to increase our turnover by 50% over a 5-year period. In addition, and through licensing, manufacturers of cookware and household appliances will be able to fulfil their social and environmental responsibility using COOK-SAFE.
