JOS, a multi award winning spin off from Pisa University, was created with the sole purpose of exploiting a paradigm shifting patented technology for device electrical charging and data transmission.
The JOS project is based on a patented technology allowing to offer a safe, simple, efficient, customizable, cost completive, cable free lighting and charging system. It allows up to 25% energy saving, above 90% reduction of the produced WEEE, and a fully integrated experience for the final user, integrating a wide range of electronic devices, including mobile phones, laptops, lights, sensors, IoT devices and much more. Thanks to the reduced power consumption of the connected devices, the technology allows a return on investment for the final user in about 1.5 years.
In order to confirm the feasibility of the JOS, we have carried out a 4-month study on the technical, commercial and financial feasibility of our project. We have checked the technical developments ahead and prepared a complete execution plan for the development and engineering of the complete JOS product range. We have performed an in-depth analysis of the target markets and developed a strong market strategy and a plan for its market launching. Financially, we have drafted a detailed 4-years financial forecast which confirmed the potential return on investment of the JOS project for all the involved partners, also accounting for a pessimistic sales forecast.
During the 4 months of our Feasibility Study, based on the original work plan described in the Phase 1 proposal, we have carried out the following activities:
We have performed a detailed analysis of the needed work of technical development for the preparation of a complete execution plan that will take our product from its current stage to the final configuration, tested in operational conditions and ready for certification and commercialisation. We have also defined the required partners and third party subcontractors that will support us in the execution of the Phase 2 project, and developed a complete exploitation plan.
We have carried out an in-depth analysis of the potential target markets, selected the primary objectives, designed a market expansion strategy, as well as a marketing and pricing strategy, and developed a complete pre-commercialisation plan to be implemented during the Phase 2. Furthermore, a complete Freedom-to-Operate analysis has been performed, confirming the novelty of the JOS technology and of its concept of integrated data transmission, as well as the absence of obstacles to its commercialisation.
Finally, financial projections have been executed accounting for different sales forecasts over the period 2018-2022, confirming the financial feasibility of the project. Sources of funding have been evaluated, leading to our decision to present a Horizon 2020 SME instrument Phase 2 proposal in April 2016.
We expect to successfully introduce in the market products integrating the JOS technologyduring the last quarter of 2018 and achieve a substantial positive impact in our company, both in terms of profit, and of brand strength.
The new products will allow consolidating and further expanding our sales both in Italy and worldwide.
The product end-users will benefit from a new product supporting the current market trend, in terms of reduction of energy consumption - supporting the related 2020 EU goals- and increased level of integration, configuration flexibility and mobility. The expected reduction on energy costs of the connected devices and systems will allow end-users to positively impact on the total cost of ownership of their systems while improving the overall competitiveness of the industry.
