The AAL 2 project addresses scope of the Call SESAR-VLD1-06-2016: Increased access to airports for low visibility mixed fleet operations
Demonstration of augmented approach and landing operations are based on following SESAR solutions:
• GBAS (Ground Based Augmentation System) CAT II with CAT I airborne and ground equipment, enabling lower decision heights to CAT II minima (DH 100ft); (addresses hubs and medium size airports)
• EFVS (Enhanced Flight Vision System) to Land with operational credit down to 300 meters RVR in non- CAT II/III airports; (addresses medium, small and very small size airports)
Bridge GAP between Research and Deployment
Project Objectives:
• Demonstrate technical performance/feasibility and benefits:
• GBAS – CAT II on CAT I equipment in EU + Interop with US
• EFVS technology readiness • Increase market awareness
• Support buy-in from airspace users/aerodrome operators for future deployments
• Prepare aerodrome to EFVS operation homologation/ approval
• Provide inputs to related standardisation activities and provide feedback about ongoing EASA regulation
• Project will demonstrate:
▪ Achieving the technical performance – to support CATII equivalent minima,
▪ Maintaining high levels of flight safety, ▪ Increasing operational efficiency – enabling the business benefits,
â–ª Give feedback to ongoing new EASA AWO EFVS regulation.
WP1 - Consortium Coordination
Delivery of contractual deliverables:
• Demonstration plan – delivered to SJU with incorporated comments
• Quarterly Reports Q1 - Q4 2018 delivered (including risks update, gantt update, milestones update)
There were held following consortium meetings:
• Consortium meetings o Langen-04/18 – demop finalization
• Toulouse-11/18 – demor kick-off
Regular WP Leaders meeting (monthly) – HON+DAV and d-hoc meetings for Project extension definition.
To support communication and dissemination activities, the project was introduced/presented on targeted events:
• LATO – ANSP´s
• IGWG - ANSP´s, Airports, Airspace users, Regulators
• WAC – Aerospace industry stakeholders
• EBACE – Business Aviation stakeholders
Leaflet was created and distributed, AAL2 website launched.
WP2 - GBAS
SWP 2.1 GBAS CAT II Definition
CONOPS
• GBAS Concept of Operations (CONOPS) for GBAS CAT II based on the existing CAT I CONOPS was created for Bremen airport
Safety Case
• A local safety case analysis was generated as the GLS CAT II procedures will be introduced at Bremen for the first time
• Existing GLS procedures have been revised by DFS with CAT II minima
SWP 2.2 GBAS CAT II Preparation
o Airbus performed the Safety Analysis required to extend GLS to CAT2 conditions.
• Honeywell generated safety case analysis to validate the use of EGNOS as an adjunct to GBAS and enable advanced approach and landing operations
• DFS has reviewed several approval documents provided in order to generate an audit report documentation required from the regulator BAF for German type approval of the GBAS software version ‘Block IIS’.
• Lufthansa has prepared a Compliance Matrix for the formal application of the GLS CAT II Trial Approval by the LBA(German regulator)
• Lufthansa has performed 30 GLS CAT I Autoland Trials on A319 and A321 in Bremen, Frankfurt and Zurich.
• Ryanair performed 100+ GLS CAT 1 manual trials on Boeing 737 in Frankfurt and Malaga. Flight trial were performed as a predecessor for GLS CAT 2 Autoland operational approval by IAA (Irish regulator).
WP3 – EFVS
SWP 3.1: EFVS definition
EFVS definition studies were initiated
o Weather impact study aims at analysing the increase of aerodrome accessibility based on official weather statistical data. Definition of the list of aerodromes was achieved.
o The performance prediction study aims at analyzing the visual advantage for some weather conditions. Definition of the scope of the study has been made.
o The lowering minima study aims at analyzing the reasons why airports are classified as non-instrument runway. Review of relevant ICAO documentation and preparation of a scientific paper has been made; Recommendations to increase accessibility in low visibility conditions was also made on use case.
SWP 3.2: Aerodrome preparation
Aerodrome preparation activities have been conducted and documentation allowing issuance of approval by the regulators have been provided for Air operator parts (Dassault-Aviation, ATR) as well as for Aerodrome/ATC parts (DSNA, SKEYES, Skyguide). Preliminary feedbacks have been received by authorities. Additional clarifications will be provided beginning of 2019 to finalize approvals by the regulators and allow pioneer demos.
Preparation of a compliance matrix template collecting all requirements of NPA AWO for AAL2 EFVS to land demo was created.
SWP 3.3: EFVS demonstrations
• PIONEER flight demonstrations aim at performing flights demonstrations of advanced EFVS to land operation in complete and real operational low visibility environment on the 4 pioneer demonstration aerodromes with the participation of regional and business aviation operators.
• EFVS demos activities have been initialized with the definition of the detailed organization of the flight demo in cooperation with ANSP and aerodromes
WP1 - Consortium Coordination
Activities within WP1 will be in 2019 focused mainly on coordinating/consolidating inptus to Demonstration report and Communication and dissemination activities.
Consortium F2F meetings will be performed according to approved meeting plan.
Additionally consortium coordinator ensures countinuous reporting to SJU, regular coordination meetings between WP and, risk management activities and others.
Airborne system preparation
• Airbus will finalize obtaining of airworthiness approval for GBAS CAT II approaches on CAT I equipment for Airbus A320 family.
Obtaining Regulatory approvals – ground system
• Honeywell will obtain German type approval of the GBAS Block IIS
Obtaining Regulatory approvals – Airborne system
• Lufthansa will formally request and obtain the trial approval (GLS CAT II) to LBA
• Ryanair will formally request and obtain the trial approval (GLS CAT II) to IAA
SWP 2.3 Trial Execution
• Execute pioneer demonstrations (on revenue flights) with their fleet into Bremen on the RNP to GBAS CAT II approaches in June-August time frame with Lufthansa and Ryanair fleet.
• Collect internal aircraft data, as well as questionnaires with pilots feedback to evaluate relevant KPAs (human performance and safety) of these flights.
