Summary

Robots are increasingly taking part in our daily lives, especially in the last 5-10 years. According to the International Federation of Robotics (IFR) the demand for industrial robots has considerably accelerated since 2010, with more than 400,000 units sold in 2018 reaching a total of more than 2 million industrial robots operating worldwide. However, this important growth, which is contributing to the rapid transition to Industry 4.0, has brought other problems related to security: most of modern robots have connectivity requirements that make them more vulnerable and open to cyber-attacks.

Reports show an increase in 27% of the number of “unique incidents” (entire malicious campaigns) regarding cybersecurity, of which 58% was directed to companies. Companies of all types are aware of this fact, as surveys conducted by EY show that 53% of companies have increased their cybersecurity budget in 2019 and 65% of them foresee to increase it further next year.

In order to address this growing need, Alias Robotics has developed the Robot Immune System (RIS). RIS is a unique product that provides robots with a complete defensive system, a real-time threat prevention system to protect robots against known and unknown vulnerabilities. Based on Artificial Intelligence techniques (AI) and inspired by the human immune system, RIS brings together state of the art of hardware and software design and constitutes a Universal product adapted to the requirements of modern robots.

Work performed

During SME Instrument Phase I, Alias has prepared a feasibility study, comprising 3 tasks: market, business model and revenue scheme.
The main objective is the analysis of the innovative value proposition that enables the sale of the product with enough profit margins to allow the return on investment and ensure the future sustainability.

The main business takeaway of this study is that RIS will have a greater need and/or acceptance than initially expected, which in turn results in a growing market demand. Apart from that, the need to initially prioritise the industrial market has been detected, with a later diversification towards the commercial and consumer niches.

Final results

The feasibility study has allowed Alias to conduct meetings with potential customers and verify that RIS is more than enough from a technical standpoint. Operational aspects of the project have also been verified.

RIS provides several clear benefits compared to available cibersecurity solutions:

- Inmune inspired cognition for deep traffic inspection
- Plug and play
- Robot and interface agnostic
- No latencies, warranting full availability

Thanks to RIS, Alias expects to create 210 direct + indirect jobs by 2026, capturing 3.5% of the Spanish market share and 1.2% of the European share. This results in 8 M€ turnover in 2026.
