'Breakthroughs in Biomedical Sciences cannot be planned but for the most creative researchers to excel and for innovative fields to emerge, it is vital to create the most favorable scientific environment. One of the major challenges in the Biomedical Sciences is to have internationally competitive leaders in academia, industry or technology, who are outstanding in research but also extremely efficient managers. For this, we need to bring together professionals with expertise in Biomedical Sciences and Engeneering, as well as Communication and Management, to provide advanced high-level education that promotes science and technological development that truly translates to industrial and clinical application. However, most research institutions lag to provide adequate training at the postdoctoral level. This project attempts to fill this gap with the creation of a novel Advanced Postdoctoral Training Programme at the Instituto de Medicina Molecular - a biomedical research institute in Lisbon. We will create a new programme featuring incoming transnational mobility and reintegration of fellows that combines the extensive range of biomedical research at the IMM and the excellent technological expertise of our partner the Institute for Biotechnology and Bioengennering in Lisbon. We will offer fellows the opportunity to join an internationally competitive research group to develop an individual research project in a stimulating and truly multidisciplinary scientific environment. Fellows will take part of hands-on complementary skills training activities and individual coaching for the preparation and submission of grants. They will also have a unique opportunity to test the potential for technological development of their scientific ideas by performing secondments at IBB and of enrolling a tutored “Go-to-market” project. As whole, the training is oriented to provide new skills that are of crucial importance for a successful independent international scientific career.'
