'The goal of the proposed project is to enhance the research potential of the IMBB in the areas of proteomics and systems biology and to provide immediate support for research excellence to its junior faculty. Collectively, the effort of ProFI will have three immediate reprercussions: on one hand it allow IMBB to strengthen its status as a centre of fundamendal biological research excellence in the EU periphery (the IMBB is situated in Crete, one of the EU convergence regions). On the other hand it will strengthen IMBB's capacity to secure competitive funding from the EU and other International sources. It will secure continuity of a research effort in the younger generation of researchers.'
Proteomics is the study of all proteins produced by an organism and is pivotal to discovery of disease biomarkers and therapeutic targets. EU funding has supported creation of a centre for proteomics to strengthen an important EU convergence region.
Proteins play important roles in virtually all cellular- and systems-level functions from signalling and communication to metabolism to cardiovascular and nervous system activities. Proteomics is to protein research what genomics is to genetics. It is the study of the entire protein complement of an organism. That in turn is related upstream to the genes coding for those proteins and the systems that turn production on or off and downstream to function in health and disease.
A world-class research institute in Crete initiated the EU-funded project 'Proteomics facility at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology' (http://profi.imbb.forth.gr/ (PROFI)) to add proteomics to its multidisciplinary research areas. The Institute established an extensive research programme covering genetics, the neurosciences, immunity, protein function and structural biology. Work was strengthened by collaboration with co-located groups at the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH) in the physical, mathematical and computer sciences.
The newly established PROFI includes state-of-the-art experimental instrumentation, computers and software. These tools are fully exploited by the Institute Director, two postdocs and a technician, who all bring important expertise to the group. In its short existence, the proteomics facility has delivered nine peer-reviewed scientific publications and its researchers have drawn international attention at many conferences through papers and poster presentations.
PROFI is a powerful addition to the world-class Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology in Crete. Its already strong presence on the international research stage has laid the foundation for attracting additional experts in the field, collaborations and funding to support research efforts. This will have important impact on molecular diagnostics, biomarker discovery, and development of novel drugs to treat cancer and neurodegenerative and infectious diseases.
