'The land surface as part of the Earth system affects the regional and global climate, and the climate in turn has an effect on the structure of the land surface. Increasing greenhouse gas concentrations, changing aerosol composition and load as well as land surface changes are influencing the climate of the Earth, globally as well as regionally. China and the Asia monsoon area have been identified as one of the critical areas of the Earth where environmental changes can have a profound effect on the whole Earth system. The main objective of Land-Atmosphere Interactions in China (LAIC) joint research programme is to increase mobility and exchange of researchers between EU countries and China to obtain better understanding of land-atmosphere interactions for climate change research and environmental policy in China. This program focuses on four areas: 1) megacities, atmospheric composition and air quality, including aerosol particles; 2) drylands and the hydrological cycle; 3) process modelling and regional climate modelling 4) carbon cycle and trace gas flux measurements, including research and knowledge transfer at comprehensive flux measurement sites. LAIC programme builds a basis for long-term collaboration between EU and Chinese research organizations in the area of climate change and air quality research. LAIC will exploit complementary expertise of the participant organizations and participants in order to create synergies among participants and to establish long-lasting partnership between European and Chinese research organizations. LAIC programme will utilize the state-of-the-art knowledge of the leading European and Chinese climate change and air quality researchers to achieve new scientific results and breakthroughs. As multi- and cross-disciplinary studies essential in climate change research are lacking in China, this programme will essentially also work towards an integrated approach for future joint international projects.'
