'The focus of the OSMOSIS project will be to support different organizations (mainly SMEs), in being involved in the overall European security market, by increasing their capabilities to understand and focus on security market trend and untapped potentials, link with relevant stakeholders, and facilitate their involvement in the technological supply chain, also by favoring joint research and development activities with RTD organizations and large industries. To achieve the project objectives, the proposers with their unique background deriving from the implementation of several analogous actions, will focus on the following activities: • Identify opportunities in the Security technology supply chain. This will be achieved through the involvement of key stakeholders such as Large Organizations and RTD performers • Identify organizations (mainly SMEs) not involved in such technological supply chain to stimulate and favor their capability to enter in such market • Set up meta-clusters of SMEs defined around specific parameters/competences of specific interest of categories of stakeholders in the security domain. This will include the implementation of IT communication means (web portal and Database of pre-qualified SMEs) that will favor the connection of SMEs with the key stakeholders in the Security domain • Set up communication and networking actions that will favor the entrance of organizations (mainly SMEs) in the security technological supply chain, including the setting up of workshops and webinars, the implementation of technology transfer tools available from the web site to allow the dialogue and the exchange of information related to the identified market opportunities towards the registered (in the db) organizations. • Facilitate the setting up of RTD and Take Up actions in the security sector where SMEs and other identified organizations could join stakeholders and integrators of the security supply chain.'
Meeting security needs in a rapidly changing world has become easier, thanks to an online platform hosting expert businesses and stakeholders.
High-tech security is a pressing need in today's volatile world, and Europe is working hard to lead innovation in this respect. One way to advance security is to strengthen relevant small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that are generally fast at innovating and responding to market needs.
In this context, the EU-funded project 'Overcoming security market obstacles for SMEs' involvement in the technological supply chain' (OSMOSIS) facilitated cooperation between SMEs and key security players. The latter included system integrators, technology providers and end users in a bid to identify untapped market potential and further security-related technology.
To achieve its aims, the project team fostered strong research and development (R&D) initiatives between SMEs and larger firms, building a database of qualified businesses to spur new partnerships. It investigated weak spots and market opportunities in the supply chain, mapping the security of critical infrastructure such as airports, transport hubs and utilities. The initiative also involved examining security at large events such as sports games or religious ceremonies.
With the use of two-way communication systems, sensors and software, project members researched specific security solutions for monitoring pedestrians and vehicles in high-risk areas. They also examined emergency management that involved first responders, focusing on the timely coordination of responses in natural or man-made disasters, as well as search and rescue of victims. This would require high-tech solutions that can gather and distribute information continuously.
In addressing these challenges, OSMOSIS established a web-based community that involved and outlined key SMEs, R&D stakeholders and technology providers. The online platform offered information on funding opportunities and project ideas, encouraging networking through interactive communication tools, workshops, e-newsletters, information campaigns and knowledge transfer among users.
New partnerships and proposals have already emerged from the project, such as an ambitious proposal on improved search engines for advanced video surveillance archives. Overall, the OSMOSIS platform is set to become a reference point for organisations in the security market chain, forming a key cluster to share knowledge and promote calls for action.
A more competitive security sector is expected to emerge from this initiative, ultimately raising the security level in society and meeting the increasing security needs both in Europe and beyond. From averting disaster to stoking the economy, the positive impacts of OSMOSIS are likely to be felt for years to come.
