 Obiettivo del progetto (Objective)

'The overarching objective of the proposed project “Online Communication Analysis: Methods for Multimodal, Networked Communication” (OnCoA) is to develop an interdisciplinary methodological and theoretical approach to online communication in the field of media and communication studies that aims to provide applicable solutions for current and future demands in digital media and communication analysis. The term ‘online communication’ comprises here any communicative interaction/action on and by means of the Internet. Therefore, the project focuses on methods and underlying theories/paradigms regarding the analysis of multimodal, networked online communication where text, audio, pictures and video represent different albeit joined linguistic modes that build coherent content. Hyperlinks represent another linguistic mode that turns static and linear text into dynamic networked communication where both the text producers and readers become interchangeable actors. The innovative nature of the project lies in its interdisciplinarity, aiming at an integration of both social sciences-driven and media informatics-driven approaches in online communication research. The methodological, theoretical, and technological challenges of this research arise out of the multimodal nature of digital communication (e.g. websites or weblogs with text, audio, and video content). Additionally, the multitude and networked (i.e. hyperlinked) nature of online communication demand a revision and amplification of existing approaches to online communication analysis, specifically regarding the traditional methods in social sciences, such as content analysis.'

The future of online communications

Descrizione progetto (Article)

Media in general, and online media in particular, have become a highly influential part of social and community life for many people. Hence, it is important to predict and provide for future demands.

This was the aim of the EU-funded project 'Online communication analysis: Methods for multimodal, networked communication' (ONCOA). The two-year undertaking studied online communication via a case study of news media, and worked to provide methods for such analysis.

The project completed six of eight tasks during its first phase. The remainder, training goals, were achieved during the second phase. The latter provided opportunities for broadening a network of collaborators, and for developing capabilities in complex data analysis.

ONCOA developed an innovative method for analysing online communication. The method involved combining quantitative techniques for text and content analysis, with semi-automated qualitative image analysis. Such use of large datasets was a new introduction to social studies. A similarly new element was incorporation of user perspectives into traditional text analysis studies.

The enlarged network of associates led to an international knowledge transfer programme: Online Research at Large. One exchange was realised and two more were planned. A funding body was also established.

ONCOA developed the field of online communications analysis. The work provided insights into online news media, and enabled information exchanges.
