'The building envelope (roof, façade and basements) is the key element to address in order to achieve the energy efficiency in the retrofitting of buildings, where the façade represent the largest part of the heat transmission surface and includes a number of critical components (like windows, balconies, ventilation units, etc) and thermal bridge phenomena.
The present project aims to develop an energy efficient integrated system composed by an innovative concept, built on composite materials, and advanced multifunctional panels with technological modules integrated in the façade for building envelope retrofitting. The following solutions will be developed:
- Innovative façade concept for retrofitting based on new industrialized constructive system integrating advanced multifunctional panels, technological modules and installations; allowing personalized configurations for each façade typology, orientation and local climate conditions, always using standardized panels and technological modules. It will be cost effective in service life, with low maintenance, easy assembly and disassembly.
- Energy Efficient panels and modules integrated in the façade will include a particular technology for reducing energy demand of the building or for supplying energy by means of RES; two new energy efficient modules will be developed: Advanced Passive Solar Protector and Energy Absorption auto mobile unit, Advanced Passive Solar Collector and Ventilation Module.
- A set of flexible, lightweight and cost-effective structural panels, easy to be industrialized and assembled, made of composite materials (FRP - Fibre Reinforced Polymer).
The solution will be demonstrated in a real building in Spain, in a region with a continental climate, where extreme conditions in summer up to (>35°C) and in winter (<0°C), covering the different seasons. The building will be monitored before and after the retrofitting with the new Retrofitting system to evaluate the performance solutions.'
A building's facade, which includes features such as windows, balconies and ventilation units, plays a major role in the transmission of heat. An EU-funded initiative is developing a new concept based on composite materials and energy-efficient panels that can be retrofitted to the facade of a building to improve energy saving.
Current retrofitting solutions merely offer thermal insulation, have low aesthetic value and are limited in the range of buildings they can be applied to.
In addition, climate and energy needs are not fully considered and little use has been made of innovative technologies.
These failings are being addressed by an EU initiative that integrates multifunctional energy-efficient panels and technological modules, combining them with new composite materials to create a new, easily integrated facade for retrofitting to buildings.
The non-intrusive installation of the facade will prove cost effective over its service life and require little maintenance. The project 'Multifunctional energy efficient facade system for building retrofitting' (http://www.meefs-retrofitting.eu/ (MEEFS RETROFITTING)) is developing an innovative multifunctional facade system that will dramatically improve energy efficiency in social housing across Europe.
The multidisciplinary consortium involves large companies, small and medium-sized enterprises, research institutions and innovation organisations.
Project partners will develop a set of low-cost, light-weight flexible panels made from fibre-reinforced polymer.
These panels are simple to manufacture and assemble as well as disassemble and recycle.
In addition, two modules for reducing energy demand or supplying renewable energy will be developed and integrated into the multifunctional panels.
The integrated facade system will be tested on a real building in the south of Spain.
Through its exposure to a continental climate, it will experience extremes of heat and cold.
The building will be monitored before and after retrofitting of the system in order to determine its performance.Certification of the retrofitted building will be carried out according to current national standards and the onsite cost advantages of the tested system.
The facade comprising the multifunctional panels and energy-efficient modules will be configured and general conditions developed for use in at least two other European climates. The main beneficiaries of MEEFS RETROFITTING work include the owners of public and private buildings, tenants, energy utility companies and retrofit providers.
Although the project was aimed at social housing it also provides businesses with a cost-effective way to reduce their operating costs through energy saving.
Retrofitting of energy-efficient facades will also play a valuable role in enabling EU Member States to achieve their energy efficiency targets.
