 Obiettivo del progetto (Objective)

'The main goal of this proposal is to discover the molecular basis of vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid, AsA) accumulation in citrus fruits. Gaining knowledge on this topic would lead to the identification of candidate target genes for future plant breeding that could contribute to improve citrus fruit quality. The research proposed in this project has three major objectives: the identification and characterization of the pathway/s involved in the AsA metabolism in citrus species, cellular localization of mRNA of the key genes involved in the AsA biosynthetic/recycling pathways and AsA histochemical localization in the different cell types of the fruit, and the identification of AsA modifiers by studying the natural variation resources. In summary, the project has a positive impact in several sectors of the society, first by increasing food quality we can improve human´s health and nutrition. Second and looking at the economic point of view, farmers, citrus processing industries and pharmaceutical companies could benefit from the data obtained through this study. Third and not less important, the project here described also contributes to increase the scientific knowledge and can provide with biotechnological tools extremely useful in academic research and food crop production.'
