'In order to increase the coordination efforts the MANUFUTURE2013 conference is proposed with a special focus on expressing the ETP MANUFUTURE community’s view on the Horizon 2020 – the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (2014-2020). The event is planned for the second half of Lithuania’s Presidency of the Council of the EU (in autumn 2013) at the time when legislative acts on Horizon 2020 will have been adopted by the EU Parliament and Council already, thus the conference will serve as a forum of stakeholders to discuss the possibilities on how to better operationalize Horizon 2020 and respective national initiatives. The project’s specific objectives are as following: • First, to prepare a conference implementation plan, including a conference programme and a plan for the follow-up actions and outreach activities, by organizing the work of the Conference Organizing Committee: identifying and selecting stakeholders to be involved as keynote speakers, panel and round-table moderators, preparing a well-timed and structured conference programme and the list of outreach activities; • Second, to implement the conference plan achieving above average (70%) turnout of the confirmed attendees from the key stakeholder institutions (national agencies and the EU institutions, European industry associations and technology platforms, high-level expert groups and major research consortia) and preparing a Position Paper, reflecting the consensus reached at the conference; • Third, to run outreach and dissemination activities and follow-up events: a) organizing visits for press and conference participants to manufacturing sites, b) holding a competition for pupils and students in technical creativities and practical applications of modern engineering technologies, and c) distributing conference materials through social media and professional networks in order to gain publicity and achieve the impact. The objectives will be achieved by organizing during the mid-term of Lithuania’s Presidency of the EU (autumn 2013) the high-level policy conference “MANUFUTURE 2013: MANUFUTURE View on Horizon 2020”, which will address the needs of manufacturers in the field of research and development in industrial technologies and the synergy between the initiatives of the EC and the Member States within the framework of global challenges and regional capacities.'
H2020 provides seamless support from idea to market, covering the full innovation cycle that benefits R&D in industrial technologies. However, H2020 is not aligned with national funding initiatives that deal with the innovation cycle. A cohesive framework with harmonised and streamlined processes is required.
The main aim of the 'ManuFuture view on Horizon 2020' (http://www.manufuture.europarama.it (M-FUTURE2013)) project was to ensure enhanced synergies between EU- and national-level programmes to better leverage the manufacturing industry.
Consortium members held a high-level policy conference in 2013 on how to better utilise H2020 and the corresponding Member State initiatives in the context of worldwide demands and regional characteristics. In addition, the team dealt with the requirements of manufacturers in R&D in industrial technologies. The three-day event gathered more than 500 participants from key stakeholder institutions spanning 40 countries.
The team evaluated European global challenges in manufacturing R&D and regional smart specialisations in key enabling technologies that strengthen innovative manufacturing. Specifically, they concentrated on forming new jobs and boosting productivity in energy, machinery production and metal manufacturing in the Baltic region and Eastern Europe. This will be achieved by transferring enabling technologies from information and communication technologies, cleantech and green energy companies dealing with the industrial R&D void.
Project participants contrasted the consistency and interrelation of the various funding programmes. The goal was to ensure manufacturing industry requirements are dealt with in reinforcing capacity building in research, skills enhancement and job formation.
The team produced a final Position Paper about the consensus reached at the conference on achieving cooperation between H2020's industrial leadership pillar and the related Member State initiatives. This synergy will give way to international manufacturing approaches and strategic regional approaches to economic development through targeted support to research and innovation.
M-FUTURE2013 presented how a more efficient H2020 can generate sustainable economic growth and jobs, and strengthen Europe's global competitiveness.
