'AccliPhot is an interdisciplinary, intersectorial research and training network devoted to study photosynthetic acclimation processes in plants and algae. We will train 13 early-stage researchers (ESRs) and 1 experienced researcher (ER) in cutting-edge experimental technologies, modern modelling approaches, industrial applications and a wide spectrum of complementary and industry-relevant skills. In the frame of our research goal to obtain a systems-wide understanding of photosynthetic acclimation processes and their consequences at the organism and population levels, individual research projects and targeted secondments will expose the ESRs to intense interdisciplinary collaborations wielding complementary experimental and theoretical approaches to study photosynthetic acclimation across various scales of biological organisation. Projects will investigate signalling pathways that respond to environmental changes, electron transport chain activity, photosynthetic metabolism and growth of plants and algal populations using four organisms. Fundamental research uncovering novel mechanisms will be performed in Arabidopsis and Chlamydomonas. New knowledge will be applied to the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum, which will be subject to industrial research for the biotechnological production of biofuels. With complementary competences acquired in specialised workshops, the ESRs trained in our network will emerge as highly qualified scientists experienced in interdisciplinary collaborations. Exposure to research in the private sector and training in an industrial environment will stimulate their creativity and enhance their entrepreneurial spirit, thus optimising their perspectives on the European job market in academia, industry and beyond. Our research activities will have a long-term impact supporting the optimisation of crop productivity and the development of cost-effective strategies for algal biofuel production.'
