'The project SEATIDE brings together Southeast Asian (SEA) and European researchers with two objectives: research and network development.
Research. Using locally focused field study methodologies, our experience of research on integration frameworks in Southeast Asia shows that historical and contemporary integrative processes include some groups and exclude others. Exclusion of communities presents risks to human development and security, even of framework disintegration. This understanding directs our research question: in processes of integration, who is excluded? We address it in thematic work packages – with relevant qualitative/quantitative case studies guided by a common analytical framework – focused on four key issues: diversity, prosperity, knowledge and security. Attention to SEA’s sub-regions and globalisation/transnational issues defines our approach.
Structuring the European Research Area (ERA). On the basis of existing structures – the unique EFEO network of 10 field centres in SEA, plus ECAF, EUROSEAS, ASEF – we work for the development of effective, integrated networks of EU-SEA research, embracing Western European and ASEAN-founder countries alongside Eastern/Southern Europe and post-communist SEA nations. Broad dissemination of results is essential to the project’s success, through conferences, publications, press coverage and policy briefs. Our recent and innovative research serves to improve the dialogue – initiated in the EFEO’s FP7 project IDEAS – between social scientists and policymakers.'
Integration models in Europe and Southeast Asia (SEA) are confronting major challenges. Against this backdrop, an EU initiative is bringing together researchers from both regions to examine integration and exclusion processes in SEA.
To better understand the benefits of and threats to national and regional SEA integration, a holistic approach to research is needed that combines the study of exclusion and inclusion.
With this in mind, the EU-funded 'Integration in Southeast Asia: Trajectories of inclusion, dynamics of exclusion' (http://www.seatide.eu/ (SEATIDE)) project is leveraging interdisciplinary SEA networks to strengthen European research in the field.
The project takes both a national and transnational approach to SEA integration on the issues of diversity, prosperity, knowledge and security. The focus is on the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), particularly Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.
Project members are carrying out field studies on each of the four research themes and will produce reports highlighting their findings. They are examining how national integration deals with regional cultural diversity and how movements of people in SEA impact livelihood and gender practices. Researchers are also analysing knowledge networks and their links with the outside world.
These joint research activities have led to the creation of networks between higher education institutes and universities in various EU Member States, and between European and SEA institutions and researchers.
Two policy forums are linking researchers with policymakers, and three dissemination workshops are bringing together key players from government agencies and civil society.
SEATIDE is enhancing scientific cooperation, networking and targeted capacity building between Asian and European researchers. By continuing to shed light on demanding socioeconomic and cultural issues, the project should ultimately foster permanent dialogue between the two regions.
