'The SAPGERIC project aims at organization of LT presidency conference “Structural change promoting gender equality in research organizations”. The main goal of the conference is to reflect the current state of activities at EU level targeted for promoting gender equality in research institutions and enhance the effective dialogue and knowledge sharing between academia, research institutions, funding agencies, researchers, policy makers and society. The concept of the conference includes three closely related aspects: political, institutional and “academic” covering different areas of activity: policy making, governmental, institutional and specific role of scientific society and having different tasks and challenges. The conference is going to: offer the platform for stakeholders for sharing and learning from the best practices gained in promoting gender equality in research; provide the input to European Strategy and sustainability to perpetuate the results and reflect on how the stakeholders should collaborate within. The LT presidency priorities allows to broaden the frame of EU gender mainstreaming policy in research offering the possibility to include gender issues into running international and regional EU programmes closely concerned with research activities. The wide dissemination campaign enlightening the conference and enabling use of modern tools foreseen in the project will lead to raising awareness among research institutions, funding agencies researches and society at large on the best practices modernizing research institutions and promoting gender equality in research. It will contribute to the continuation of conference tasks and objectives in the post project period and ensure the sustainability to perpetuate the conference results through more effective participation of stakeholders from Member States in Horizon 2020, new COST activities and initiatives concerned with inclusion of gender in science related issues in Action plans of EU international and regional non- scientific Programmes such as Eastern Partnership and Baltic Sea Strategy.'
A conference on gender equality in science helps tackle one of the EU's greatest challenges. It emphasises the significance of including women researchers in the arena of competitive economics based on scientific achievements.
Promoting gender equality is a main goal for research institutions across the EU. This was reflected in the Lithuanian Presidency conference titled Structural changes promoting gender equality in research organisations. The conference aimed at enhancing effective dialogue and knowledge sharing between academia, research institutions, funding agencies, researchers, policymakers and society.
At the heart of this conference's organisation was the EU-funded 'Structural change promoting gender equality in research organisations' (http://www.sapgeric.eu2013.vu.lt/ (SAPGERIC)) project. Three closely related aspects made up the conference: political, institutional and scientific. As such, different areas of activity were covered accordingly, each with its own tasks and challenges.
Stakeholders from 34 European countries participated in the conference, which aimed to provide a platform for them to share and learn best practices. Other conference aims included providing input for European strategy and sustainability and reflecting on how stakeholders can collaborate internally.
Both content and technical issues were part of the conference and constituted part of the project's results. This included developed documents that include recommendations for furthering implementation on structural change through promoting gender equality. Communication of activities and dissemination also took place.
The measures undertaken to implement structural changes for promoting gender equality in research institutions will serve as an important part of their modernisation process. In turn, this can help to the establishment of gender equality in research organisations.
