'Potential funding from the European Commission (FP7 – Call Energy.2013.3.2.1) would be used in the BIOREFLY Project in the design, procurement, construction and operation of an advanced 2,000 ton/y paraffinic aviation fuel pre-commercial industrial demonstration plant in Italy, for the conversion of organic residues (such as lignin derived from the conversion of lignocellulosic feedstock into bioethanol) into the liquid biofuel.
The Project will be coordinated by Biochemtex, a wholly-owned global engineering subsidiary of Mossi & Ghisolfi (M&G), that from 2009 has demonstrated the technological, economic and environmental sustainability of second generation bioethanol production from lignocellulosic feedstock (PROESA® technology). Biochemtex is operating pilot/demo plants able to convert the renewable lignin into precursors of the jet fuel (Jet A/Jet A-1).
The next step in the evolution of this technical platform is the construction of a demonstration facility, that will be the first in its kind at industrial scale, able to combine a second generation lignocellulosic conversion with an innovative technology for jet fuel production. So, the overall goal of the BIOREFLY Project is to demonstrate and validate the key process units (such as catalytic conversion of coproduct lignin into precursors, separation and chemical conversion to the desired jet fuel composition) at pre-commercial scale, enhancing the techno-economic feasibility of the entire process and paving the way to large industrial production and aviation market utilization. Through the collaboration with R&D centers and key industrial players in the aviation sector, the BIOREFLY project will prove and disseminate the results with test on engines and demonstration flights.
