'At the end of 2005, the main stakeholders in the area of Smart Electricity Networs (SmartGrids), including the European Commission, established the European Technology Platform (ETP) of the Electricity Networks of the Future SmartGrdis. As a result of a call for proposals to support the establishment and running of European Technology Platforms (call FP6-2005-ENERGY4) the European Commission provided financial support to the Platform secretariat for contract duration of 30 months awarded to ZABALA (ZABALA) (coordinator of the previous and present secretariat). In June 2006 the first formal tasks started with a secretariat that provided managerial, administrative and communication support to the SmartGrids ETP. Presently, the objective of this proposal is to provide continuity to the work of the secretariat, with better matching to the ETP needs and challenges ahead, in terms of efficient, impartial and transparent management of platform activities, projects and communication strategy and so contribute to achieving the statutory platform objectives and ensure their highest quality. The four main activity lines of the secretariat are: • Support to the main bodies that are part of the internal structure of the SmartGrids ETP: SmartGrids Forum and Mirror Group with the organisation and management of periodic meetings. And internal communication exchange. • Generation of high quality results supporting in the definition, management and development of public results. • Support in the implementation of a communication strategy based around an information centre (public internet site), yearly conferences, newsletters, participation in other conferences and direct cooperation with the European Commission. • Implementing monitoring activities and quality control reviews of platform activities and results. The consortium for this project comprises three complementary partners uniting all necessary skills to achieve the objective'
The secretariat of the European Technology Platform for Electricity Networks of the Future, also called SmartGrids ETP, supported the operation of this platform. The platform is helping guide research and innovation in smart electricity networks.
The European energy market is experiencing a major transition towards a smarter, more sustainable and more economical energy grid, both in terms of policy and technology. Launched in 2005, the SmartGrids ETP brings together major stakeholders in the area of smart electricity networks, including energy suppliers, manufacturers, academia and decision makers.
The secretariat facilitated the gathering of experts to develop visions and strategic documents, under the leadership of the platform chair. In 2012, the Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) was updated from its 2008 edition, to chart a course to 2035.
The secretariat also helped facilitate SmartGrids ETP's production of high-quality results, and assisted in the implementation of a communication strategy centred on an online information centre, newsletters, events and conferences. The secretariat co-organised a General Assembly in March 2012 to present the updated SRA.
