Our economy and society are currently facing serious challenges. It would therefore be desirable, if politicians, business people and scientists could better foresee and proactively moderate thenon-going systemic changes rather than having to react to them in the state of crisis. Many of the current problems result from the circumstance that economic and social systems have been driven out of equilibrium through developments like globalization, population growth, or changes in the age distribution, to mention only a few of them. For these and similar reasons, social and economic systems are subject to transformation processes. However, many policies today are still based on strategies and scientific concepts, which were primarily developed for systems in equilibrium. Hence, the development of new concepts is urgently needed in order to be able to assess and shape future economic and societal scenarios successfully.nTo address these challenges, this proposal wants to develop the concept of a 'Social Knowledge Collider'. This shall create optimal conditions to unleash the potential of real multi-disciplinary projects involving social scientist, economists, computer scientists, physicists, biologists, system scientists, and engineers. A better, quantitative understanding of complex socio-economic systems, including systemic risks, integrative multidisciplinary research and innovation at the interface between the social and natural sciences and engineering shall be facilitated by applying new potentials of ICT systems and developing new systems.nThis will involve: i) large-scale socio-economic data mining and the creation of centers for crisis forecasting, ii) the development of social simulation supercomputer centers with the aim of facilitating an integrative socio-economic systems design, iii) the build-up of an innovation accelerator, and iv) the identification of grand challenges to be addressed at the interface between ICT and the socio-economic sciences
