'The SIMBA II project aims to increase RTD cooperation between the EU and the ICPC of Brazil, China, India, Russia and South Africa. SIMBA II will look at how the EU and ICPC can jointly increase road safety, mobility and transport efficiency, improve road and transport network management and research appropriate pavement design while at the same time improving levels of transport-related pollution. This will enable SIMBA II to support emerging markets in their efforts to improve transportation while at the same time enhancing European industrial competitiveness via transfer of technologies. Special attention will be paid to mobility and road management, urban traffic issues and public transport in order to better assess and evaluate the development of new infrastructure and of policy-led ITS solutions through sustainable urban transport planning. ICPC could benefit in this respect from the latest experiences in the EU and move forward integrated transport network management, focusing on policy solutions to tackle congestion and environmental challenges. During a 24-month period, the SIMBA II project will set up and run a series of expert groups to further work on the priorities defined in the first SIMBA project. It will bring together European and local ICPC organisations to engage in preparatory technical work, including feasibility studies for the development and/or implementation of new ITS and infrastructure technologies in the ICPC (looking at adapting European technologies to local needs in an effort to improve local transport conditions).'
A combined international initiative led by the EU to support road safety is bringing positive change to the transport sector.
Road safety is a global issue that can benefit from joint global efforts to research the issue and improve safety standards. The EU-funded project 'Strengthening road transport research cooperation between Europe and emerging international markets II' (SIMBA II) has brought Brazil, China, Europe, India, Russia and South Africa together on the subject. Under this consortium of nations and regions, it is enhancing transport safety and efficiency by researching pavement design and finding ways to alleviate pollution.
Important topics on the agenda also include public transport, mobility improvement, road management, traffic issues and sustainable urban planning. In effect, expert groups under the project are working on elaborating new transport policies in road safety to strengthen sustainable urban transport. Moreover, the international nature of the project is enabling stakeholders to exchange best practices and develop a common vision for all countries involved.
The project is defining priorities that would enable it to achieve its goals and is reinforcing previous efforts achieved under the first SIMBA project. It is also raising awareness in the EU and abroad on priorities and common needs in road safety and efficiency. The participation of public authorities and the integration of SIMBA II goals into the long-term directives of the partners will also help to ensure the continuity of the project.
the emerging results are set to support different countries in developing infrastructure to make transport safer and raise the standard of living. Defining a common approach will also help strengthen European industry in the field while enabling countries or communities to leapfrog towards the most ideal solutions in transport and safety. The project, in short, will be of benefit to individuals, societies, industries and governments in a myriad of ways.
