This proposal is submitted to maintain and further increase the Microsystems design activities in European Universities and Research Institutes which has arisen since the start of the successful courses created and offered during the current STIMESI project due to end in December 2009.The goal of the STIMESI-2 project is similar but more focused than that of the current STIMESI. Experience over the past 2 years has shown that coupling of the hands-on courses provided by STIMESI with the design tools, design kits and MPWs of EUROPRACTICE has resulted in a significant increase in Microsystems design activity in the European academic sector. Consequently in STIMESI-2, it is proposed to concentrate on courses for the processes readily available through the EUROPRACTICE IC Service. The emphasis of the STIMESI-2 project is on 'training' and 'hands on sessions' supported by tutors close to the MEMS foundry and very familiar with the design tools. To maximize the didactic aspect, special attention is given to two course preparation & evaluation meetings. The project will operate in close cooperation with EUROPRACTICE, which allows universities and research institutes to get access to the required MEMS design tools, design kits, and to MEMS technologies for prototyping at affordable prices. The project will additionally use EUROPRACTICE mailing lists and branding to ensure maximum penetration. After 4 years of stimulating by the first STIMESI project, about 400 students and professors from more than 100 institutes in 25 countries have attended a STIMESI course. Over the last year alone, 10 new institutes submitted 15 MEMS designs to EUROPRACTICE for fabrication.STIMESI-2 is a consolidation and evolution of the previous STIMESI project and investment. It additionally addresses an increasing need, in the More-than-Moore era, to deliver skilled young engineers and designers to the European industry to ensure European industrial competitiveness.
