 Obiettivo del progetto (Objective)

'Within the STREAM project, PPIMC aims at further strengthening its research capacity in the targeted scientific sectors by means of mobility and knowledge exchanges with excellent research EU institutions, participation and organisation of scientific events, hiring of experienced researchers, up-grading of its laboratories and networking with both industry and other research organisations, but most of all through a complete reshaping of its internal organisation. PPIMC ambitions are to adopt a totally integrated interdisciplinary approach around four research areas, defined by the Institute as priorities, in order to converge towards excellence on a crucial topic: “high added value multifunctional polymeric materials: concepts, mechanisms, properties, application”.

The project will strengthen the research excellence of the institute and will therefore increase the attractiveness of the scientific career for young researchers in Romania. Further, the project will reinforce the capacity of business and governmental exploitation of research results and cooperation with industry and will set up a bridge between the Romanian chemical network and the European Research Area.

In order to meet the main goal to improve the research potential at PPIMC, STREAM plans to reinforce and strengthen the established collaborative links with leading European institutions undertaking research and practice in Polymer Science. A complex schedule of exchange visits at different scientific level will allow the transfer of knowledge in the area of planning according to the social needs, management and supervision of strategic research activities in the concerned field. Within the STREAM proposal PPIMC will collaborate actively with 13 research centres from France, Germany, Poland, Slovenia, Spain and Switzerland.'

Introduzione (Teaser)

An EU-funded project helped build research capacity in polymer science at a Romanian research institute to help with its integration in the European Research Area (ERA).

Descrizione progetto (Article)

The Petru Poni Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry (ICMPP) in Romania specialises in polymer science and technology. The 'Strengthening the Romanian research capacity in multifunctional polymeric materials' (http://www.regpot-stream.ro/ (STREAM)) project was established to assist ICMPP in strengthening its research capacity. It aimed to reinforce established links with 13 leading European polymer research institutions.

Overall, the principle result of the STREAM project was reorganisation of the ICMPP to focus research efforts into four interdisciplinary streams. These are supramolecular/interface chemistry and physical chemistry; bio-based polymeric materials, environmental protection and energy conservation; bio-oriented polymeric materials; and polymers for high-tech applications.

STREAM has enriched the research infrastructure of ICMPP with four major new instruments, including a high-resolution electron transmission microscope and a small angle X-ray scattering spectrometer. The project also provided the training required to use the machines.

Thirteen experienced researchers were hired, eight of them being integrated into the institute personnel scheme and a number of training programmes were planned, organised and monitored.

STREAM also sponsored researcher exchanges between the ICMPP and its European partner institutes. The exchanges have led to 18 new interdisciplinary research collaborations, and all returning researchers shared their knowledge with ICMPP colleagues.

The visibility of ICMPP was further increased through participation in various workshops and symposia. Ultimately, the project outcomes will strengthen research excellence at the ICMPP, and connect the Romanian chemical research network to the ERA.
