'Focus of research in CIBIO is evolutionary biology, conservation genetics, and ecology in a conservation context. A large part of research lines employs the DNA level analysis of biological diversity. During the last years, new technologies arose in this field, which provide today the opportunity to generate new types of datasets with especially high information content for genome based investigation of biological diversity. The proposal of CIBIO has two main objectives: 1) to install new generation sequencing platforms and integrate the respective techniques in CIBIO scientists research, and 2) to equip the unit with the computer infrastructure necessary to handle the increasing amount of data and analytical procedures for downstream sequence analysis and for modeling approaches. This activity will be accompanied by strengthening our research staff and by training and exchange of expertise in collaboration with international partners. The acquisition and implementation of the new technologies and the development of the respective expertise will enable the institution to fully develop its potential in quality of research and international recognition.'
Researchers are establishing a platform for modern sequencing technologies to advance their studies in the areas of biodiversity and evolutionary biology. This could increase research quality and output in the public and private sectors.
The Research Center in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources (CIBIO), Portugal, relies on genome-based studies for much of their research in biological diversity. For scientists, it is fundamentally important to embrace technological advances to keep up to date with current trends.
The EU-funded 'Capacity building at CIBIO for research using next-gen sequencing' (CIBIO-NEW-GEN) project aims to establish a next-generation sequencing platform to integrate into CIBIO's research pipeline. In addition, it will upgrade existing infrastructure and establish training programmes to accommodate this increased capacity.
The project has acquired two Next Generation Sequencing systems as the foundation of the new platform. Operators receive training, while experienced scientists are recruited to help researchers take full advantage of the technology.
This research platform has also helped CIBIO connect with the private and public sectors. As a result, they are in the process of commercialising some of their methods, and TV documentaries are being finalized to keep the public informed and interested.
Quality research and international recognition will make it possible to attract more private investments and make the project sustainable long term. Ultimately, CIBIO can become a significant player in the European Research Area (ERA) and actively contribute to regional economy and social welfare.
