'I-MOVE proposes to implement a new Fellowship Scheme targeting Experienced Researchers with the objective to promote incoming, outgoing and re-integration motility between European Member States on one site and all academic and Italian industrial research laboratories on the other side. The programme is aimed at promoting the development of international mobility in order to accelerate interaction between industry and the science-base in favour of competitiveness and innovation in a field that is anticipated to have a tremendous social and economic impact. Because of the multidisciplinary nature of the project, incoming and outgoing fellows will necessarily work together with colleagues having other expertises and knowledge thus contributing to create a community exchanging different experiences and expertise. The scale of the program reflects the need of the Regione Umbria to internationalize its fellowship program with the creation of a new scheme that offers researchers the opportunity to gather experience abroad and to be reintegrated into the national scientific community. The initiative will offer both long- and short-term fellowship to provide the flexibility to address scientific objectives of different complexity.'
An EU project is promoting the development of international mobility for experienced researchers (ERs) in the life sciences. Specific to the fields of genomics, genetics, informatics and nanotechnologies, it will accelerate interaction between industry and academia for major social and economic impact.
The project 'Initiative for the mobility and development of researchers' careers' (I-MOVE) is working towards enhancing competitiveness and innovation at both regional and international levels. It is achieving this by sponsoring an ER fellowship scheme reflecting the need of the Italian region of Umbria to internationalise its ongoing career development schemes.
Researchers with a PhD or accepted MD will gather experience at renowned research institutions in European and Associated Member States as well as Italian research laboratories. Thereafter, they will be able to reintegrate into the regional scientific and industrial community.
The scheme, covering both short- and long-term fellowships, is being realised through a total of four calls, of which three have already been published. It is open to all relevant ERs in the national and international scientific community, and falls under the Marie Curie Actions of the EU's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7).
Emphasis is placed on outgoing mobility schemes to help Italian researchers acquire new skills and expertise at institutions abroad. Scientists from abroad are also part of I-MOVE's focus, seeking to attract them to newly built Italian biomedical centres and to create opportunities for international collaborations. The approach promises long-term benefits, with the exchange of skills, information and technologies in innovative fields set to impact both regional and national research capabilities.
Targeting a total of 35 fellowships over its 5-year duration, the project has, in its first 2 years, already published 25 long-term (24 months) and 21 short-term (6 to 12 months) fellowships. Six fellowships were awarded in the first call (early 2012), 14 in the second call (late 2012), and 13 in the third call (finalised November 2013). The majority of applications (34) were by women scientists, of which 20 were successfully awarded.
I-MOVE is promoting the acquisition of knowledge and technology in fields marked as future drivers of research and product innovation. This will enable the fellows to return to Italy and find work or establish their own enterprises in Umbria.
