'The Project LIGHT-TANK is aimed to find out a way to produce oil tank and connection pipes in Thermoplastic Composites to be used in helicopter engine for the Gearbox system. Different thermoplastics materials, need of reinforcement and processes will be analysed to find out the cost effective way of producing such a components. When material and process are selected. Part desing will be carried out. At last step prototypes will be produced and tested, with the goal to arrive to show the feasibility in terms of technical specification, defined in the topic, and cost effectiveness to be then a real choice for weight saving and more enviromental friendly solution.'
Metal components are currently greatly determining the weight of the helicopter engine. To reduce weight and emissions, EU-funded scientists are using plastic materials to develop an innovative oil tank sitting under the engine gearbox and connection pipes.
The helicopter industry is under mounting pressure to increase fuel efficiency. To this end, focus is placed either on increasing engine performance or decreasing its weight. Especially in the latter case, considerable efforts are devoted to replacing metal alloys with organic materials.
Funded by the EU, the project 'Feasibility study and prototypes manufacturing of oil tank in thermoplastic for helicopter engine' (LIGHT-TANK) sought to analyse different thermoplastic materials to produce lighter helicopter components in a cost-effective way. In particular, these new materials would be used in the oil-tank equipment mountings such as oil filling plug, draining plug and oil-level sight indicator. Furthermore, they would find use in pipes connecting the gearbox casing and the oil pump to the tank.
Researchers also focused on how to attach the oil tank to the gearbox casing, and the pipes to the oil tank. Use of automated manufacturing processes to ensure process accuracy and repeatability was taken into account. A data logger would record pressures and temperatures in the oil tank. A highly automated process would also be used to control production speed, temperature and thickness in pipes. Through a well-controlled moulding technique, the pipes should acquire the desired final shape.
Upon conclusion, LIGHT-TANK was expected to develop a prototype to demonstrate the concept and prove that cost effectiveness can be intertwined with weight and environmental savings.
