 Obiettivo del progetto (Objective)

Researches in Media and Television Studies until today focus either on media industry, content, audiences or media technology. Recent developments regarding the globalization of television formats and the intermedial distribution and reception of television content via the internet and mobile media have been analyzed merely with regard to audience reception and participation. The research project ‘Repetition and Seriality in the Age of Television Studies 3.0’ will integrate all four dimensions of television to give an example of television in times of current global and intermedial transformations and will explore how these challenges effects European media landscape. This research objective should be achieved by the analysis of the recent phenomenon of transnational adaptations of television series in the US and Germany. REPEAT will analyze for which reasons television series are adapted by national channels or distributed globally, how the content and format of the series are transformed by transnational and intermedial adaptations and the series reception by audiences and critics. In comparison to preceding researches REPEAT will account for the multidimensional aspects of television productions by developing and extending the new interdisciplinary research methodology ‘Television Studies 3.0’ that is able to explain major current global challenges in media technology and its influence on society.

Introduzione (Teaser)

How are television series being adapted by transnational channels and is the adaptation more successful than the original? These are some of the questions a current research study seeks to answer.

Descrizione progetto (Article)

Traditionally, television was known for having a format repetitive in structure, which is a main feature of television series in particular. In recent years, this format has been altered by transnational adaptations of television series. In the past, people would watch daily or weekly television series at home in front of their television, waiting for the next episode to air. Nowadays, with digital recording and the availability of television on the Internet, viewers have various additional options.

The EU-funded project 'Repetition and seriality in the age of television studies 3.0' (REPEAT) is looking at current global transformation of television with a focus on television series exemplifying this transformation. Three aspects in particular constitute the study's main areas: industry, audience and media technology. The three are intertwined since, for example, television series of different countries are now available worldwide. This means that television production and reception is more diverse and thus has more of an impact on European media.

Research focuses on two series in particular. One is the United States' HBO series 'In Treatment' and how it compares with the original version 'BeTipul' from Israel, which has been adapted in more than 10 countries. The other is the American Showtime series 'Homeland' and its relation with the Israeli version 'Hatufim'. The second season of each series started simultaneously in each country. Beyond that, the Israeli version was imported in France, Germany, Scandinavia and the United States via various online Internet companies. What the project is looking more closely into is the reasons why a series with such a specific topic can be more compatible worldwide than one with a more general topic.

Understanding how television series are compatible with a global audience not only gives insight into innovation strategies, it also has socioeconomic implications.
