'IST Austria is a newly established, public research institution with an integrated graduate school. Founded in 2006 through an Austrian Federal Law, the IST campus in Klosterneuburg, 18 km from the center of Vienna, was opened for theoretical research in 2009 and for experimental research in 2010. The Institute is dedicated to cutting-edge basic research in the natural and mathematical sciences; it currently hosts 16 research groups - four of which are supported by ERC grants - and will grow by 5-7 new groups per year for at least the next five years. By actively promoting cross-disciplinary collaborations, IST Austria aims at breaking down the traditional boundaries between disciplines. The Institute offers an attractive, English-language environment for young scientists from all over the world and prepares them for an academic and research career. At the predoctoral level, IST Austria recruits PhD students internationally and, after a successful completion of the PhD degree, sends them abroad for their postdoctoral career. Conversely, in order to attract outstanding postdoctoral researchers from abroad, the Institute is in the process of setting up a program for outstanding international postdocs - ISTFELLOW - for 80 fellow years over 5 years plus two fellows from Austria (not part of this).
ISTFELLOW will be open to qualified applicants from all over the world who are interested in spending the postdoctoral stage of their scientific research career at IST Austria. Initially, the program is intended primarily for postdocs in cell biology, evolutionary biology, neuroscience, biophysics, computer science, and related fields. As the research portfolio of the Institute will branch out into other areas in the coming years, including physics, chemistry, and mathematics, so will the ISTFELLOW program. At all times, in keeping with the spirit of the Institute, ISTFELLOW will give preference to scientists who have a strong interest in multi-disciplinary approaches.'
IST Austria, outside Vienna, is a young research institute, founded in 2009. The Institute specialises in fundamental research and graduate education, combining natural and mathematical sciences in an interdisciplinary way.
Backed by EU funding, the project 'International IST postdoctoral fellowship programme' (http://ist.ac.at/research/postdoctoral-research/istfellow/ (ISTFELLOW)) aims to provide attractive postdoctoral research fellowships at IST Austria. The purpose is to facilitate innovative research. The project runs between mid-2012 and mid-2017 and is expected to fund 40 positions.
The Institute offers an English-language environment, combined with excellent working conditions. Fellowships are open to any qualified applicants, but priority is given to candidates wishing to independently conduct theoretical or experimental research in IST Austria's research themes. These include cell biology, evolutionary biology, neuroscience, physics, mathematics, and computer science.
Overall, the result of ISTFELLOW will be facilitation of competitive postdoctoral fellowships in the areas of IST Austria's multidisciplinary research.
