'This Coordination and Support Action proposal aims at aiding the implementation of the Joint Programming Initiative on Antimicrobial Resistance (JPIAMR). JPIAMR currently has 18 participating countries and organisations from 8 of these are active partners of the CSA consortium. This proposal describes in detail the different work packages (WPs) that have been suggested in order to secure the rapid implementation of JPIAMR as a mature European partnership. In summary, WP1 delivers the coordination and management needed for efficient operation, WP2 delivers a communication strategy to ensure that everyone in the field is made aware of JPIAMR. Efficient communication strategies will enable cooperation, which will be further explored in WP5 on stakeholders’ involvement. WP3 delivers an SRA, which WP4 will implement. Both of these steps will be done in close collaboration with WP5 to ensure that input from relevant stakeholders is taken into account. Finally, WP6 will enable a framework for the evaluation of the initiative as well as set the rules for IPR. By this, the aim of the JPIAMR – to integrate relevant scientific fields across national borders and to create a common European research agenda with a shared common vision – will be addressed.'
Antibiotic resistance is a global problem that concerns all countries and levels of society. A global reduction of the burden of microbes resistant to treatment such as antibiotics will lead to reduced health costs and saved lives.
Research of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Europe is fragmented and few countries have specific programmes dedicated to this field of research. The EU funded http://www.jpiamr.eu (JPIAMR) project is working to coordinate research efforts to create long-term reduction of AMR in Europe. It is developing scientific programmes, integrating relevant scientific fields across national borders and creating a common strategic research agenda. It also provides a forum and platform for initiating and coordinating joint actions with potential stakeholders.
At the beginning, JPIAMR established a secretariat and a management board with representatives from 19 member countries. The project developed a website featuring a professional platform for information sharing, stakeholder recruitment, a document library and public consulting input.
JPIAMR hosted its strategic research agenda launch conference with an audience that included representatives from funding agencies from every continent, as well as researchers, and policymakers. The scientific advisory board was appointed and consists of international top researchers in the AMR field.
AMR research activities and funding is being mapped among JPIAMR partner states as well as some additional countries. The JPIAMR implementation plan has been developed through a series of workshops and consultations with key stakeholders. The first transnational call was launched in January 2014 with the participation of 14 agencies. By the pre-proposal deadline of March 14, 94 consortia had submitted proposals. In addition, a stakeholder forum of 842 members provides a broad, global two-way channel for JPIAMR to both disseminate news and collect input.
By bringing together industry, and public health and academic bodies, JPIAMR is slated to realise a long-term reduction of AMR in Europe. Project activities are expected to reduce health costs and to save lives.
