'The SME consortium behind the ICAB project wishes to address a major market opportunity by developing a new battery management system (BMS) for large scale lithium-ion battery packs, targeted primarily at electromobility applications. Specifically, the consortium wants to develop an innovative integrated circuit for performing advanced battery management, at lowered cost of production, which enables improved reliability, efficiency and safety compared with currently available BMS solutions.
The main innovation behind this project relies on the development of a BMS technology that significantly advances beyond state of the art, and aims at reducing the high component count and overall price, through the use of ASIC technology. The developed solution will therefore leverage the incorporation of premium technologies in higher volume (lower cost) products.
ICAB’s final outcome will be a cutting-edge technology which could play a significant role in the mass market introduction of electric vehicles (EVs) worldwide. In a scenario where EVs are regarded as key elements for promotion of sustainable mobility, both from energy and environmental policies perspectives, ICAB appears as a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between recent technology advancements in batteries and market viability requirements. Together, the technology know-how and market knowledge of the SMEs, with the quality of the research track record of the RTD performers, will ensure a successful achievement of the project objectives, and ICAB will generate a universal top-notch BMS technology at a lowered price, with distinctive attention in safety. As a result the participating SMEs will strengthen their position in a global market, with significant potential to be grasped, through a joint European effort.'
Researchers are developing a cutting-edge battery management system (BMS) for large-scale lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery packs, targeting a future market in which electric vehicles (EVs) replace fossil fuel-powered ones.
