 Obiettivo del progetto (Objective)

'The contribution of SUSTAIN-MS to EU manufacturing added value refers to environmental sustainability issues addressed through more efficient model-based design of manufacturing systems that will yield more efficient production by reduced waste and energy use. The way to achieve this is to apply machining processes with advanced cooling-lubrication and to adapt machine tools to such a stage that the process vibrations are decreased. In support of SUSTAIN-MS design efforts the following sustainability measures will be defined: manufacturing process energy use, ancillary energy, machine tool vibrations, tool consumption and waste, cooling-lubricants, CO2 emissions, costs, health and safety. The major milestones of SUSTAIN-MS research relate to the optimised sustainable design of machining process and cooling-lubricants parameters, the solution of vibrations stability for particular machining process and the integration of machining process micro level models with the machine tool macro level models. The SUSTAIN-MS training activities that are not directly connected to scientific and technical research include the acquirement of complementary research skills, dissemination skills, project management skills and training in education. The SUSTAIN-MS objectives are in accordance with politically endorsed sustainable manufacturing directives underlined in the EU Sustainable Development Strategy and the EU Environmental Technology Action Plan.'

Introduzione (Teaser)

The integration of energy and resource conservation to enable sustainable high-performance manufacturing of advanced materials is of fundamental importance to both the efficiency of manufacturers as well as to the environment. EU researchers have evaluated three different factors in the manufacturing process with respect to the above to provide recommendations for improved sustainable manufacturing.
