'This program encompasses the coordinated action of three major Biomedicine Research Centers and a Biotech shell in Lombardy, to launch a new Structured International Post-Doctoral program (SIPOD). These research centers operate in conjunction with the Scuola Europea di Medicina Molecolare (SEMM) whose aim is to promote the training and research of young scientists within emerging sectors of biomedicine. SIPOD is designed to attract excellent scientists and to boost their career as post-doctoral fellows towards becoming successful and independent group leaders. SIPOD aims to foster the incoming trans-national mobility and the reintegration of fellows. SIPOD is characterized by: 1. Trans-national mobility and re-integration of fellows. 2. Freedom of choice for the fellows to select the research topic and destination within the receiving Host Institutions. 3. Equal Opportunities for men and women, and consideration of career breaks. 4. Higher education program based on five training activities: Patenting, Tech transfer and Licensing; Grants scouting, writing and management; Team leading and Group organization; Translational Research and Clinical Trials; Ethical issues in science. 5. Fostering the career development toward successful and independent group leaders. This program stems from internal and external post-doctoral surveys indicating that at present the career transition from postdoctoral fellow to group leader (independent investigator) is not supported by an adequate training/educational support. SIPOD is designed to fill this gap.'
A targeted training programme should help stem the EU brain drain. The initiative is being designed to invest in career development for future science leaders.
There is a perceived brain drain of European scientific talent to the United States. Some feel that the solution is incentives and other career support for young scientists. Thus, the EU-funded SIPOD project aims to invest in a young generation of biomedical researchers.
The project provides two-year post-doctoral fellowships that include leadership and other career development training. This could set up the young researchers for a future life as skilled group leaders, and to foster their transnational mobility.
The positions are open to qualified candidates from Europe and abroad, and provide five training activities: patenting, technology transfer and licensing; grants, scouting, writing and management; team leading and group organisation; translational research and clinical trials; and ethical issues in science.
SIPOD was initially funded for 48 months, but in December 2011 requested an extension of a further 18 months. It first offered 24 fellowships that were partially fulfilled in 4 calls over the primary period, and a further 2 calls were offered in the extension period.
The SIPOD initiative gives equal opportunities for men and women and provides for the inclusion of career breaks. Fostering transnational mobility and reintegration of fellows, the project is developing the sound framework to create a future network of biomed scientists.
