 Obiettivo del progetto (Objective)

'Trentino is the right bay for research and development. It hosts a large number of research labs from environmental studies to high-tech technologies. The Province of Trento allocates several resources such as infrastructure, real estate and funds to encourage research and innovation. Many institutes, both public and private, local, national and international have established their research units in Trento and Rovereto in order to transfer the knowledge from the research arena to industries. In order to facilitate the development of the research environment the PAT decided to start its Research Mobility programme. The Trentino programme started in 2003 with the first call for proposals for incoming research post-docs and implemented in 2006 with the call for proposals for Research Teams. The general objective of this proposal is to increase the number of trans-national fellowships awarded, to introduce a new outgoing and reintegration scheme and to improve the fellows’ condition. Thanks to the COFUND action the number of researchers coming from outside Italy could be increased and the local/Italian researchers be reintegrated. Besides, some researchers could profit of international experiences and then come back to Trentino. Furthermore the conditions of the fellows will be improved by promoting the implementation of the conditions described in “The European Charter for Researchers and The Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers”, in particular by offering employment contracts instead of stipends to the fellows, by establishing a career development plan at the beginning of the project and by introducing an assessment questionnaire at the end of the project. Another objective is to improve the Internet website and its English version.'

Introduzione (Teaser)

An EU project has fostered researcher mobility in the Trentino province of Italy. The undertaking successfully funded more research fellowships than initially anticipated, improving the local research and economic situations.

Descrizione progetto (Article)

Trentino is an autonomous province in the north of Italy. The provincial government has invested significant funds in innovative research, and the region hosts numerous research centres.

The EU-funded project 'The research, training and mobility programme in Trentino' (TRENTINO) was a researcher mobility programme that ran from June 2009 to June 2014. The project was granted a one-year extension beyond its initially proposed schedule. Its seven aims concerned fostering incoming and outgoing mobility of young and senior researchers, and otherwise developing researchers' career skills and working conditions.

Project members introduced a reintegration scheme whereby young researchers, either native to Trentino or having ever lived or studied there, could easily return. The group also set dissemination goals.

TRENTINO issued two calls each for various types of incoming and outgoing researchers. In total, 58 fellowships were funded, 11 of which continued beyond the project's closure. Incoming foreign researchers represented about 27 % of applicants, but 43 % of the funded fellowships. Approximately one third of successful applicants were women. Working conditions for visiting researchers were equivalent to permanent employees.

The number of external experts involved in the evaluation process of the research projects was 146.TRENTINO was a success in terms of number of applications and awarded fellowships.

Successful scientific dissemination activities included three short television items about research projects, and several meetings that fostered dialogue among researchers and other stakeholders.

The project is considered to have successfully fulfilled its aims of fostering scientific mobility, and hence improved the Trentino research system. By bringing in many visitors, the project helped the region's economy as well.
