 Obiettivo del progetto (Objective)

'IDIBAPS is a public research centre that includes a hospital, an university, and a research institute. IDIBAPS aims to increase its scientific production and quality by strengthening its existing research programs through the proposed BIOTRACK Project. It is a good opportunity to enlarge existing schemes and offer better conditions for the fellows to make IDIBAPS more attractive for the most promising researchers. The Post-Doctoral Program is an In-coming mobility action that will be reinforced by BIOTRACK opening up to more places a year. IDIBAPS receives post-doctoral students for three year placements to train and develop their careers; whist at the same time their work and talent reward the centre. Through the Extramural Sabbatical Program IDIBAPS encourages Out-going mobility for PhD physicians of the hospital to do a research stage of maximum one year in a foreign center. BIOTRACK opens this scheme up to professional researchers too. Improving knowledge in new methodologies, future application in the hospital in order to increase the quality of medical health care and continuous incentive of the professionals are the main results of this initiative. The Recruitment-Reintegration Programs are programs co-funded by the government. Long-term careers in the center managing new research lines are offered to highly qualified researchers that are successful in these calls. BIOTRACK improves the start-up funds offered, thus making IDIBAPS an even more attractive choice. The combined impacts of these three programs help IDIBAPS to achieve its overall goal of becoming a European center of excellence in biomedical research.'

Introduzione (Teaser)

Biomedicine and biomedical research is a vast field with ever-expanding boundaries as a result of new discoveries. The sector requires highly trained and talented researchers as well as innovative research initiatives to promote health and welfare.

Descrizione progetto (Article)

The project six-year project, 'Professional training and career development in biomedicine' (http://www.idibaps.org/biotrack/ (BIOTRACK)) was initiated to further this goal in southern Europe. It is co-funded by the European Commission and the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS).

BIOTRACK initiated two mobility schemes to improve the skills of promising researchers and facilitate their careers in biomedicine. These included three-year placements for post-doctoral students offered through several competitive calls and start-up incentives offered to perform research within different reintegration schemes.

As a result, 18 fellowships and six start-ups were or are being co-funded by BIOTRACK. The major achievements are the ongoing employment of the recruited researchers beyond the first project period.

Considerable efforts were made to optimise management of BIOTRACK for better implementation of project objectives and calls' management. The project website has proved particularly useful in this regard with both private and public tools.

Project performance was evaluated after 24 months with input from key stakeholders including researchers, principal investigators and evaluators resulting in a report. Some amendments will be made eventually based on reviews. Areas to be addressed include immigration issues, relocation assistance and maternal leaves.

By 24 months after project initiation, the increased visibility of the BIOTRACK programme on an international level resulted in more researchers vying to work at IDIBAPS. The end result will be mutually beneficial with talented researchers furthering their careers and the European Research Area benefiting from cutting-edge biomedical research. Ultimately, such initiatives will facilitate R&D as well as innovation, with immense benefits to society.
