'Even in the sunniest regions of Europe, current solar heating systems for single houses or buildings are not yet able to provide their heating needs all year round based only on incoming solar radiation. The main reason for this is that thermal storage technologies are designed neither in size nor in insulation performances to allow for safe and reliable autonomous heating. Recently, EnerSun has shown promising results using pure glycol as the thermodynamic fluid and well insulated storage systems to meet such needs in several sunny regions of Europe. This is why a consortium of SMEs active in the solar heating business - SC Madi Service, Intex, Errece Laser, Austrian Consulting Engineers Group, Di Luzio Engineering, Azur Chauffage, Phönix Sonnenwärme.- have asked Enersun, Honeywell and AIMEN acting as RTD performers to validate the technical and economical potential of this new solar heating system. The project objective is to develop and to validate a prototype system in two years, reaching the industrial quality of current solar heating systems and the capability of pure glycol to work at temperatures near 160 °C. It will enable architects and heating system engineers to address i) new solar building design, ii) the retrofit of heating systems in existing buildings. The project is coordinated by CSTB, which brings extensive simulation capabilities of the storage tank hydrodynamic behaviour and the whole heating system. EnerSun, AIMEN and Honeywell bring the complementary industrial expertise to achieve the project goals. The project impacts the competitiveness of both the industrial partners and the RTD providers: the industrial partners will be given access to a very innovative solar heating system to address European market needs for CO2-free heating needs of buildings and houses. The research partners will be the first consortium in Europe to validate a pure glycol thermodynamic cycle responding to a growing market demand for solar heating systems.'
