 Obiettivo del progetto (Objective)

'This proposal is devoted to the investigation of impact loads on concrete structures. The design and dimensioning of concrete structures as redundant building structures, containments and other protection systems is a fundamental part of the present safety and reliability research. The clear knowledge of the various impact loads and of the interaction of those loads with reinforced or pre-stressed concrete structures is an essential basis for a realistic modelling and calculation and hence for the development of effective protection strategies against impact. The innovative nature of the project is the combination of both, modern numerical simulations as well as advanced testing methods using instrumented impact tests for validation of the numerical models. The overall aim of this proposal is to further develop the knowledge about the several types of impact problems and its special application on concrete structures. The result of the project should be a clear specification of these loads with recommendations for both, the suitable modelling and numerical simulation as well as the experimental reproduction. The secondary objective is to extend the experiences of impact testing and the connected specific measurement methods (high-speed cineradiography and photogrammetry, acoustic emission, etc). The project will lead to significant advances of understanding of short-time response phenomena of concrete structures and provide a basis for designs capable of withstanding such severe environments. The fellow has the strong intention to obtain his post-doctoral lecture qualification at the end of the fellowship period. This qualification will greatly assist in helping the applicant to attain professional maturity. Following his fellowship, the applicant intends to apply for funding for an independent research group under his leadership. The applicant’s long-term career objective is to obtain a position as a full professor at a European university.'
