'The Land Use Modelling and Analysis Network aims to co-ordinate and consolidate the research efforts of three organisations involved in land-use modelling and analysis and to animate the aspirations of the European Research Area. This 4 year programme of exchanges of early stage and experienced researchers will enliven a research area with considerable capacity for intellectual innovation and with wide applicability to real-world problems faced by regional administrations, such as resource management and spatial planning which occurs in many territories around the world.'
Improving land-use modelling
A valuable decision-making tool, land-usage modelling provides a framework for understanding how humans utilise and alter the landscape. Current research challenges include helping governments effectively apply the information for planning, and linking models with scientific integrity.
Such themes drive the EU-funded 'Land use modelling and analysis network' (LUMAN) project. Running over four years to the end of October 2014, the group includes two EU members and one from New Zealand. The aims are to coordinate and consolidate research among partner organisations regarding land-use modelling and analysis. The project supports exchanges among early-stage and experienced researchers.
To date, the consortium has established significant relationships among the partners. The resulting scientific exchange, concerning integrated modelling and ecosystem services, has provided valuable confirmation of research and feedback. Also resulting from relationship-building, LUMAN jointly convened a workshop within a conference in July 2012. The collaboration has yielded ideas for further joint research, exploration of funding opportunities and a proposal submitted to the Irish Environmental Protection Agency.
The LUMAN project is developing its research field through productive research cooperation, which will also help governments apply land-use modelling for practical benefit.
