'Achieving business flexibility is a necessary condition for the business development of SMEs, especially nowadays due to the global market downstream. The business flexibility implies flexibility in the underlying ICT infrastructure and business processes. Moreover, in the current climate, midsize organizations also need to achieve flexibility in an affordable way, since in the current economic climate, organizations are under pressure to freeze expenditure and wring ever more return from existing assets. Business process management (BPM) is a class of software which directly contribute to enterprise performance by driving operational excellence and business flexibility. However, current solutions for BPM are tailored to the need of big companies, are quite expensive and drive mainly technology flexibility and not necessarily business flexibility. ReFLEX aims at strengthening the competitiveness of the SME participants by developing a new BPM model tailored to the need of SMEs for being continuously aware of the changes in the environment and to change/adapt themselves accordingly in order to keep the business process running well. Indeed, in that way SMEs will increase their responsiveness on the new business opportunities (or threats) which is a crucial feature for the business development (even survival) for small fishes in big oceans of the globalized economy. However, in order to realize the dynamic BPM, a substantial research on the new model for the description of (ad-hoc) dynamic business processes is needed. This includes the development of a novel workflow engine that will be able to execute such processes as well as the calculation of changes on the fly. ReFLEX aims to perform this research in order to develop, deploy, validate and exploit such an approach for the benefits of SMEs. Additionally, ReFLEX will develop and validate the business models for participating SMEs, especially non-IT service providers in order to ensure the business value return.'
New software is improving European businesses processes and their reputation for customer service. Helping streamline customer-facing activities and back-end processes with proactive solutions, this software also optimises energy consumption.
Business flexibility, or agility, has to do with the ability of a company to adapt to changing circumstances and remain a profitable enterprise. A business that is able to anticipate changes in consumer preferences and alter production to meet those new expectations has a much better possibility of continuing over the long term. Adding and retaining customers is the key to survival for European businesses in the current economy.
For this reason, the project 'Reinforcing flexibility of SMEs by dynamic business process management' (http://www.ReFLEXforSMEs.eu (REFLEX)) developed a tool called ReFLEX Software Solution. An affordable alternative for SMEs, the researchers analysed, studied and developed this software based on the needs of SMEs to remain agile and technically nimble.
The resulting packageis made of multiple parts. There are components for electronic document management, customer relationship management, planning tools, a warehouse management system, a geographic information system, complex event processing and others.
Project members tested the software in two businesses. The contribution to real-time responsiveness of the test food business and the test beverage distribution business was shown to improve operational capacities. Customer relations and customer service satisfaction levels also improved in two test groups.
Additional benefits were realised in energy-saving opportunities identified by the software in the transportation processes. Commercial sales are on the horizon.
