 Obiettivo del progetto (Objective)

The SUNGREEN project seeks to reinforce the University of Nova Gorica, strengthening its innovative approach for research and development of new knowledge in environmental science and novel nano-structured materials. The reinforcement will be realized through establishment of strategic partnerships with top European R&D centres, recruitment of experienced researchers, acquisition of state-of-the-art research infrastructure, enhancement of UNG visibility and its collaboration with different stakeholders in the region. Through the implementation of the project, UNG will reach its full potential for research and technological innovation and will become one of the leading European research centres in the field environmental sciences and nano-materials. Excellent environmental science reputation of UNG is the result of integration of physics, chemistry, biology material science and computational science disciplines. Main objective of the project is strengthening of the research potential of UNG that needs new knowledge and research equipment. Project will enhance the capacity of UNG to successfully participate in research activities at EU level. The objective will be achieved through networking with other European world class research players, upgrading of relevant RTD infrastructure, recruitment of experienced researchers as well as through dynamic contribution to the regional and European sustainable socio-economic development through networking and dissemination activities. Project will pave paths for industrial uptake of new environmental technologies and will contribute to knowledge based economy and last but not least to cleaner environment. Transfer of know how will enable industries in the region at European level to produce innovative new products with high added value. Through project implementation, UNG will establish partnerships that will enable economically sustainable research both alone and in collaboration with network of partnering organizations.

Upgrading the University of Nova Gorica

Descrizione progetto (Article)

Slovenia joined the EU in 2004 and the Eurozone in 2007. As with many New Member States, the EU has assisted Slovenia to improve its research capacity and level of participation in EU projects.

Such are the goals of the EU-funded http://sungreen.ung.si (SUNGREEN) project, which began in late 2011. The aim is to upgrade Slovenia's University of Nova Gorica (UNG), and in particular the fields of nanotechnology and environmental sciences. Efforts are expected to foster industrial uptake of new environmental technologies. The improvements were planned to include new staff and equipment, and strategic partnerships. The consortium includes four European partner organisations.

During the initial reporting period, SUNGREEN first established its Management Board. The project also initiated numerous relevant research connections, leading to valuable exchange of knowledge. Additionally, the team recruited seven experts in various research fields of interest to the group, plus a project manager and industrial liaison officer. Creation of the Industrial Liaison Office, including an intellectual property management strategy, led to many effective networking partnerships with local and European industries and businesses.

The consortium planned to purchase and install two kinds of electron microscopes before the end of the first reporting period. However, procedures within the national tender process resulted in long delays. As a consequence, the supply contract was signed on the final day of the reporting period, and installation was to have occurred eight months hence.

Also during the first reporting period, SUNGREEN organised one international conference and one thematic workshop.

The outcome of the project will be UNG's integration into the European Research Area (ERA), and enduring partnerships with top European research groups. In addition, the capacity of UNG research will have been significantly upgraded, with likely benefits for European business and the environment.
