'This proposal aims at the conduct of three Nobel Laureate Meetings in the upcoming years:
61st Nobel Laureate Meeting, 2011, dedidcated to Physiology/Medicine
62nd Nobel Laureate Meeting, 2012, dedidcated to Physics
63rd Nobel Laureate Meeting, 2013, dedidcated to Chemistry
All meetings aim at bringing young sciencists (approx. 550 per meeting) together with Nobel Laureates, serving as scientific role models, for a full week of scientific and personal exchange.'
An EU-funded project was established to support the organisation of the 61st, 62nd and 63rd Nobel Laureate Meetings. For each respective year, the topics of these meetings are physiology/medicine (2011), physics (2012) and chemistry (2013).
The 'Nobel Laureate Meetings in Natural Sciences 2011 - 2013 with Laureates as Scientific Role Models' (LIN11-12-13) project aimed to bring some 600 young scientists in contact with Nobel laureates for a full week of scientific and personal exchange. Results of the 2012 meeting, held from 1 to 6 July, were presented for the particular reporting period.
Project partners completed all work planned and achieved the overall goals of the Nobel Laureate 62nd Meeting.
More specifically, project efforts successfully supported the participation of 20 young researchers and 2 Nobel laureates.
Held in the form of science master classes, four sessions were conducted as part of the session series on life and research experience.
The first was with laureate Albert Fert, the second with laureate William D.Phillips, the third with David J.Gross, and the fourth with George F.Smoot.
In addition, a closing panel discussed 'The Future of Energy Supply & Storage', sparking a lively debate between the audience and panellists from certain high-profile institutions. The 2012 Nobel Laureate Meeting was deemed a major success, and the outcomes are slated to strengthen the European science system as a result of its so-called brain-gain function.
A solid gender balance (65 men and 35 women) was maintained, and the event enjoyed broad media attention.
Another noted impact, as was underlined by the evaluation results, resulted from the activities of education, inspiration and networking with excellent scientific role models.LIN11-12-13 made a strong contribution to enhanced communication between science and society, including policymakers and the general public.
This bodes well for related EU efforts focused on creating a strong foundation for its envisaged knowledge-based economy.
