'The FACCE (Agriculture, Food Security, and Climate Change) CSA will prepare and support the successful development of FACCE JPI and deliver strong foundations designed to insure long term durability and a strong impulse to allow a rapid start to Joint Programming and Joint actions. The FACCE CSA will: - Define the research priorities in terms of research pillars as well as agendas based on foresight and a common understanding of the challenges ahead - Finely map the European research in the agreed prioritised areas and develop a catalogue of joint actions, options for the pooling of national expertise and resources and initiate closer and robust collaboration among the participating states of FACCE JPI in agriculture, food security and climate change - Share knowledge, know-how as well as equipment and existing research infrastructures and/or develop new facilities - Promote the CSA through communication actions with stakeholders as well as other relevant initiatives at the national, transnational, European and international levels - Coordinate and develop FACCE relationships with other relevant international initiatives - Ensure the long term viability of the FACCE JPI by designing and implementing the JPI permanent governance, management structure and long-term financial continuity, beyond the CSA - Ensure project monitoring and consortium coordination according to contractual obligations and the needs of the JPI governance. It is thus expected that the FACCE CSA, through its support to the FACCE JPI, will permit significant advances in the coordination and cooperation between national programmes on the challenge of agriculture, food security and climate change and that will contribute to the building of the European Research Area.'
Agriculture is vulnerable to climate change and all countries need to develop a resilient food system to limit its impact. An EU-funded initiative will help Europe continue to develop knowledge and technologies that will safeguard sustainable and competitive food production.
The 'Agriculture, food security and climate change' (FACCE CSA) project is Coordination and Support Action (CSA) for the successful development of the FACCE Joint Programme Initiative (JPI). JPI was an output from the Standing Committee on Agricultural Research (SCAR) foresight exercise. The EU Member and Associated States identified food security and climate change as two critical issues facing European agriculture in the future through this exercise.
FACCE CSA involves joint efforts of 11 partners from the FACCE JPI to develop tools and structures for successfully implementing the joint programming process. The project coordinated JPI activities at a high strategic level. This ensured the successful delivery and updating of the emerging concepts of agriculture, food security and climate change via a Strategic Research Agenda (SRA). Through its implementation, the SRA will tackle the global challenges of food sufficiency within the context of growing population and climate change.
FACCE CSA project successfully established a permanent governance and management structure and launched a series of joint actions. The aim of the JPI is to coordinate national research activities and resources, and to develop a common research agenda. The CSA comprises a range of activities, but must be flexible enough to adapt to national programmes and an international setting.
Main achievements of FACCE CSA include SRA development, which examines current and future national research programmes on the core themes of the FACCE JPI scope. Stakeholder input was gained through public consultation, workshops at national or regional level and the stakeholder advisory board. The http://www.faccejpi.com (FACCE_JPI website) is continually updated for external dissemination and communication activities. General information on the objectives and activities of the initiative are made available here.
The work undertaken by FACCE CSA marks the beginning of a pan-European approach to address major challenges facing society through the alignment of national programming. The approach will also help mitigate the effects of population growth and climate change.
