'The objective of this project is to strengthen the links and integration of the Euro-Argo European research infrastructure into the Argo International strategy of global ocean observations, and to seek participation by, and to develop cooperation with, potential participants in the European neighbouring areas which have a maritime interest. The following activities are planned: - Work on the evolution of the Argo core mission together with international partners (O2, bio-geochemical sensors, deep floats, extension to polar and marginal seas), - Work on the evolution of the Argo data centers (Delayed Mode Quality Control of the North Atlantic ARC and Southern Ocean Argo Regional Center) and role of the European components, - Refine the float deployment strategy in Europe and international seas and links with international partners, - making the interfaces with JCOMMOPS and Argo information center (AIC), - working on legal aspects and policy issues (law of the sea), - Organize scientific and thematic (regional) workshops open to international partners This project will be carried by the Euro-Argo preparatory phase project partners that will form the future partners of the Euro-Argo ERIC.'
The Argo International is a global ocean monitoring programme that uses autonomous floats to collect ocean data and Euro-Argo ERIC is the European component of this international programme. A recent project has strengthened the links and integration of the Euro-Argo ERIC into the Argo International strategy of global ocean observations.
Monitoring of the Earth's oceans is a key component to understand ocean dynamics and climate change. The International Argo Project is dedicated to such monitoring, but it is a complex, multinational endeavour that requires robust and regular coordination to function.
As such, the EU-funded 'Strengthening international dimension of Euro-Argo research infrastructure' (http://www.euro-argo.eu/EU-Projects-Contribution/SIDERI2 (SIDERI)) project aimed to strengthen links between the Euro-Argo Research Infrastructure and the global Argo programme. Efforts also sought to encourage the increased participation of EU countries.
The project's major output was a roadmap towards the establishment of the Euro-Argo European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC). Once the ERIC is established, the roadmap will also serve as its founding strategy document.Future priority areas for Argo were identified as part of the process. These cover monitoring of specific areas and of ecosystem parameters, and improvements to the data management system.
SIDERI also encouraged European participation in Argo through conferences and workshops with ocean researchers in various countries. Lastly, reports were prepared that address legal and policy issues Argo may face in the future, such as complying with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
The International Argo Programme is at a critical juncture where careful strategies need to be implemented to ensure that it keeps operating successfully. The outcomes of the SIDERI project have contributed significantly in this area.
