At the University of Crete Medical School, in the convergence region of Crete, Greece, there have been concerted efforts to establish a multidisciplinary scientific environment which will foster excellence in research in areas of major biomedical importance, such as stem cell biology, autoimmune, cardiovascular, malignant and degenerative diseases. The TransPOT support program aims to accelerate these efforts by enhancing the technological capability of the Institution in the fields of regenerative medicine and genomics through the establishment of state-of-the-art infrastructure, attracting high-calibre scientists and by networking with major research entities in Europe. Through a coherent set of measures, TransPOT thus aims to unlock the regional research potential and achieve sustainable scientific excellence, serving as strategic investment for the region by bringing multiple scientific, healthcare, economic and social benefits and accelerating its convergence with the rest of EU.
Promoting research on human diseases
The http://transpot.med.uoc.gr (TRANSPOT) project is one such initiative to develop multi-disciplinary research expertise and capacity at the University of Crete Medical School in Greece. Areas addressed will include stem cell biology, autoimmune, cardiovascular, malignant and degenerative diseases.
Within the first project period, researchers made considerable progress in enhancing the research capacity of their Institution. The TRANSPOT team acquired cutting-edge technology for research in genomics and cell therapy and two laboratories are now functional. Twenty-three talented research and support personnel have also been recruited, of whom two are senior scientists. Training and networking opportunities were provided through twinning with other expert EU institutes as well as participation in conferences and courses.
Efforts were made to increase the University of Crete Medical School's visibility at local, regional and international level. Already, several high quality research papers have been published in major peer-reviewed journals. The project management also organised summer schools and circulated e-newsletters to disseminate the institute's achievements in translational medical research.
Project funding helped improve employment opportunities for Greek scientists who were previously forced to look elsewhere for jobs due to the economic crisis. TRANSPOT activities should facilitate breakthroughs in translational medical research, paving the way for development of innovative therapeutic strategies for non-communicable diseases like diabetes and cancer. This should also ease the integration of this institute into the European Research Area network.
