 Obiettivo del progetto (Objective)

'We propose a joint research programme aimed at determining the importance of cluster assembly processes in driving the evolution of galaxies as a function of galaxy mass and environment, studying the Shapley super-cluster, the richest and the most dramatically active region in the local Universe. The participants will benefit from already available multi-wavelength observations, including panoramic imaging in UV, optical, NIR, X-ray and radio, and high-S/N medium-resolution optical spectroscopy. These data-sets will be complemented, in the framework of ACCESS, by new medium-resolution integral-field spectroscopy provided by the Wide Field Spectrograph (WiFeS) at the Australian National University 2.3m telescope, and wide field (~2 sq deg) surveys carried out with the Spitzer and GALEX space telescopes, thanks to the already allocated observing time at these facilities ensured by the participants’ successful proposals. The institutes participating in this proposal are, for the EU Member States: - Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica – Osservatorio Astronomico di Capodimonte, (National Institute of Astrophysics – Astronomical Observatory of Capodimonte), Napoli – Italy (INAF-OAC); - University of Durham – Department of Physics, Durham – UK (UD-DP); - University of Birmingham - School of Physics and Astronomy, Birmingham – UK (UB-SPA); and for the third country: - Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics – Australian National University, Weston ACT – Australia (RSAA-ANU). This project will support and reinforce the collaborations amongst the participants and help to establish a long-term research co-operation.'
