'Amsterdam, Friday September 26, 2008. Fifteen hundred young scientists, creative minds and other young trend setters from Amsterdam and the rest of Holland are having a great time at Discovery 08, a good party with food for thought. From 8 pm to 3 am they enjoy a lot of new music, fascinating science, the latest technologies and ideas of visionary members of their own generation. There will be talking, drinking and dancing. Watching ultra short talks by inspiring scientists or tv personalities, enjoying top artists, DJ's and VJ's, playing experimental games from media scientists, joining in live scientific experiments –and much more. And if you want to share your thoughts or hear more, a lot of Very Disco scientists will be around, having conversations about anything you may possibly think of. Discovery 08 is a nighttime event, organised by a small professional foundation and a large group of young scientists. It is organised to improve the image of scientists by showing young, contagiously enthusiastic scientists to the public, and to prove that cool science can be Friday night fun just as well as cool art, new music and nice people. Discovery 08 is the next step after the very first Discovery 06 in 2006 and the EC funded and hugely successful Discovery 07 of last year. In 2008, the organisation will be further professionalised, the press campaign will be refocused, professionalised and intensified and structural continuity for future years will be secured. Previous events were sponsored by, next to the European Commission, the Dutch Organisation for Scientific Research, the Platform Bèta Techniek, the Royal Dutch Academy of Arts and Sciences, Shell, IBM, Dell a.o. This year, sponsor talks are in progress and the National Centre for Science and Technology has already committed its support. Discovery 08 has 1500 visitors, but will generate broad public attention through national tv, radio, newspapers and other media, just as Discovery 06 and 07 did.'
