Obiettivo del progetto (Objective)
'Building on the experience of the PASR SeNTRE and STACCATO, the 2 year CRESCENDO Coordination Action intends to respond to the request of the users and the experts who attended these first workshops to continue working together and to enlarge their activities. They raised concerns on how to improve the innovation process, how to create a real European security market and how to strengthen European competitiveness by closing the loop between academia, industry, including SMEs and the users. By responding to the topic “European Security Research Networks”, CRESCENDO will also support the work of the new European Security Research & Innovation Forum (ESRIF). It shall focus on the following objectives: - Operation of an enlarged security network comprising public stakeholders, industries, SMEs, RTOs, think tanks and academia in the EU 27, with a specific focus on the new Member states, as well as in the Associated Countries, - Deeper analysis of the environment: .Evolution of societal security (threats and risks), .Policies, regulation and standardization analysis in order to define processes for harmonized, ubiquitous, clear and unambiguous, regulations, policies and standards. - Recommendations for a Comprehensive Innovation Process aiming at identifying the best possible structure for the “security supply chain”, i.e. the European Security and Technological Industrial Base (STIB), - A strategic R&D Roadmap aiming at supporting the EC, ESRIF working groups and EU Member States in preparing European and national research programmes, - Consolidation and continuous dialogue and recommendations for future development and acquisition programmes at European and national levels paving the way towards a European Security Equipment Market (ESEM). CRESCENDO will gather homogeneous communities of experts and users, to address the FP7 missions through workshops and interviews coordinated by CEA, with the main RTOs, industries and related associations as partners.'

European security networks have raised concerns about enhancing innovation, establishing a genuine European security market and boosting competitiveness. An EU initiative brought key players together and delivered a research and development (R&D) roadmap on European security research and analysis.
Descrizione progetto (Article)
Building on the experience of previous security research initiatives, the EU-funded http://www.crescendo-project.org (CRESCENDO) project aimed to strengthen the security network created by those initiatives and to expand its activities.
Project partners grew a security network made up of public stakeholders, industry, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), academia and think tanks of the EU-27, particularly New Member States and Associated Countries.
In this context of network reinforcement, the team held nine workshops, which comprised part of a broader consultation process with the enlarged community. The workshops concentrated not only on research but also on innovation. In particular, the aim was to obtain a national security assessment by gathering input and making consensus recommendations. In addition to sharing thoughts and ideas, the objective was to gain a better knowledge of the local situation in EU New Member States and Associated Countries.
Project members analysed the evolution of security market threats and assessed risks. They mapped regulations and standardisation issues in order to develop harmonised and well-defined laws, policies and standards across the EU.
Recommendations were made to improve links between academia, industry, SMEs and the service sector. In addition, an optimal structure for the security supply chain was identified.
A strategic R&D roadmap aimed at supporting various key stakeholders in preparing European and national research programmes was produced. Lastly, recommendations were made for future programmes and for continued networking and dialogue between all stakeholders.
CRESCENDO reinforced the existing major security networks and proposed a way forward to render them sustainable. Project outcomes bode well for the strategic development and competitiveness of the European security sector.
