A lot of efforts is being put lately on the development of active wound care products. The use of keratin in dressings for dermal injury (such as a burn injury) could support skin reconstruction and would healing. However, so far this has not been possible due to: 1) the low quality of the hydrolyzed keratin extracted so far that make it useless and ineffective in biomedical formulations; 2) the hydrophobic solvents used make it impossible to mix the keratin in water-based formulations and to produce nanofibers through electrospinning. KerLine has a ready-to-patent proprietary method to fabricate nanofibrous dressings for biomedical applications through electrospinning technique starting from hydrosoluble keratin and active ingredients in water solution (SkinKer dressings). This has been so far never possible because water insoluble keratin cannot be electrospun. Kerline technology offer an outstanding technological and manufacturing advantage as respect to competitors as it allows to fabricate safer, cost-effective and advantageous SkinKer dressings. In addition, SkinKer dressings offer: i) a complete coverage of the injured tissue adhesion; ii) a protection against infections and dehydration with air permeation and iii) the delivery of drugs (e.g. antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial agents) to the wound. KerLine aims to produce electrospun SkinKer dressings for the biomedical sectors and sell customized products by reaching B2B licenses and commercial agreements with companies operating in the field of biomedical devices for skin reconstruction and wound healing. Kerline aims to become a market leader in natural biomaterials used for biomedical applications by substituting inert biomaterials with the natural and multifunctional properties of hydrosoluble keratin.
