'The Research Foundation Flanders (FWO) supports basic research in all scientific domains through a range of funding instruments tailored to the needs of researchers at different stages in their careers. With support from the European Commission, the FWO intends to increase the internationalisation of research activities in Flanders and contribute to the implementation of the ERA vision by setting up a programme, co-funded by Marie Curie Actions, called PEGASUS, giving wings to your career. The programme will attract talented experienced researchers to Flanders, not only to participate in research but also to transfer knowledge and contribute substantially to their career development. The PEGASUS programme will be targeted on experienced researchers working abroad and expand the existing fellowship programme of the FWO. Applicants can be of any nationality and any scientific background. Selected fellows will be offered the same employment conditions as resident researchers and will be provided with excellent career development and training opportunities, all in line with the European Charter and Code. The PEGASUS programme will include a 1-year and 3-year incoming fellowship scheme. The 1-year scheme is to replace the existing visiting postdoctoral fellowship programme of the FWO and will raise the standards of this programme with respect to selection procedures and appointment conditions of the fellows. The 3-year scheme intends to open up and expand the current fellowship programme of the FWO to attract a larger number of experienced researchers to Flanders. The main aim of the co-funded PEGASUS programme is to realise an effective knowledge transfer between incoming fellows and resident researchers, creating future networking opportunities and enhancing the career development and perspectives of the fellow, to the benefit of both the incoming fellow and the research community in Flanders and Europe.'
Flanders is attracting talented and experienced researchers working abroad to take part in research and knowledge transfer and to contribute to their careers.
Researchers are offered support in all scientific domains through Belgium's Research Foundation Flanders (FWO). This is possible via an array of funding mechanisms that cater to researchers' needs based on the various stages of their careers.
The internationalisation of research activities in Flanders is due to increase considerably. This is thanks to the Marie Curie COFUND Programme and EU-funded project 'PEGASUS - Giving wings to the career of experienced researchers' (http://www.fwo.be/nl/mandaten-financiering/postdoctorale-mandaten/pegasus-marie-curie-fellowships/ (PEGASUS)) . The project will make a significant contribution to the European Research Area (ERA) vision.
Though it is targeted at researchers working abroad, they can be of any nationality. The research fellows receive all the necessary support such as obtaining a scientific visa, housing and social security, making their transition as seamless as possible. Moreover, they are given a flexible rather than fixed starting date.
The FWO oversees ethics in regards to each project and how it will be addressed in all applications that are received. This is in line with the European Commission's directives on ethical issues.
To date, the application rate has been met with success and even exceeded expectations. An external consulting company will evaluate the management of the programme by conducting a survey of the fellows. As such, objectivity about experiences and career perspectives can be maintained.
