'The PRIMA-ERA project is designed to reinforce research collaboration between the Institute of Physics, Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (IPA) and research centres in the European Research Area. The IPA is a leading organization on scientific research, knowledge transfer and graduate education in physics in Azerbaijan. PRIMA-ERA will facilitate the collaboration of the IPA with research centres in EU member and associate countries and reinforce its engagement in the FP7 projects in research topics covered by such thematic priorities as energy and nanotechnologies. The primary objectives of the project are: - to increase IPA capacities and preparedness for collaboration in the FP7 through twinning and networking, development of joint research plans and training modules and trainings; - to increase visibility of IPA for international scientific community and other stakeholders through dissemination of scientific information and promotional activities; - to ensure the compliance of the IPA’s research activities with socio-economic needs of the country and regionally and provide better career opportunities for young scientists through encouragement innovative approaches and development of research strategy. The project consortium between the IPA, CNRS Institut de Recherche et Development sur l’Energie Photovoltaique, CNRS-IRDEP (France) and TUBITAK – Marmara Research Centre, TUBITAK - MAM (Turkey), has been established to effectively fulfill the project’s objectives. The PRIMA-ERA will comply with the EU strategies for an “open ERA” as mentioned in the EC Communication for International S&T Cooperation by providing mobility and access to research facilities between the centres with similar research interests. The project actions will be in coherence with the concept of the “mutual interests of the EC and the ENP partner countries” as stated in the mentioned Communication.'
Azerbaijan is seeking to strengthen its collaboration with research centres in the European Research Area (ERA). An EU initiative is helping the country's main state research organisation to develop strategic research partnerships for integration into ERA.
The Institute of Physics, Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (IPA) plays a leading role in performing research, developing new technologies and methodologies, and training highly qualified experts in the Republic of Azerbaijan and the wider region.
With EU funding, the 'Promoting and improving Azerbaijan research collaboration with European Research Area' (http://www.prima-era.gov.az/ (PRIMA-ERA)) project is supporting several key efforts aimed at reinforcing cooperation between IPA and research centres in EU Member States and Associated Countries (ACs).
Halfway through its four-year period, the project enhanced capacity-building actions and gained visibility for IPA in the Caucasus region and Europe.
PRIMA-ERA boosted the research and technological development capacity of the IPA and performed networking activities with research centres in Member States and ACs. This was done by organising on-site study tours for IPA researchers, hosting an international summer school, and identifying joint research strategies in priority areas such as energy and nanotechnologies.
IPA visibility was increased through the dissemination of its research outcomes at high-profile international events and the organisation of two open days at the Institute for key actors and journalists.
Training modules were designed and a training session was held to provide Azerbaijani scientists with information about and guidance in the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7).
PRIMA-ERA promoted innovation in research and developing targeted research strategies to increase the scope of IPA within and beyond its country. Project outcomes should help to enhance IPA's position in the global research community as a centre for scientific and research excellence as well as know-how.
